I've been waiting for IE7 to appear on a PC magazine CD/DVD.
I'm still waiting for my broadband company to start up here in Cairns (but that's another story),:cry :( but now I have a copy of IE7 on DVD.

I'd like to know any tips, tricks, traps that I need to watch out for when installing IE7, replacing IE6. Can I just install IE7 over IE6, for example?

I use AOL dialup :p (yeah I know--still waiting for broadband as I mentioned earlier).

AOL runs a skin over IE6 and I very rarely actually use IE6 without the skin.

Any advice you folks can pass on will be greatly appreciated. Bazza

I wouldn't do that. You know MS rolleyes. Better do it as neat as possible, uninstalling and doing a clean install.

Warning you can't 'just uninstall IE6'
Depending on how you got to 6 in the first place you will be taken back to 5..4....etc.
There are techniques for removing 6 but they are pretty involved you would only do this if forced for repair purposes.
The upgrade will run fine 'on top of' 6 and give you the chance to roll back if you dont like it.
One tip make sure all your other Windows upgrades are up to date first - missing one is the usual reason for upset when installing 7.
BTW 7 only works on XPSP2 and above.

I'm not sure how AOL acts alongside IE7.0. I would "assume" it would still work, perhaps still utilizing a IE 6 shell. This is AOL however :p.

You might want to turn off the phishing filter if ur on dial-up, have seen some complaints that it slows you down. There was just an update for 7 too, FYI...might want to check. But I have had no problems w/7 or the install.

    I downloaded IE7 a while ago
just installed it straight over IE6 - no problems at all
Dial up - definately turn off Phishing filter

It appears to be a lot more stable than IE6 and a lot more secure even with the phishing filter off - I have not had a single operating issue with it.

you may want to add the menu bar back in:
view - toolbars - menu bar

    negatives:
the refresh and stop buttons are in a stupid place - but you get used to them easily (with time)

the one thing that really annoys me is when you add something to favorites, the whole tree is expanded, so, if you have 50 or so folders in favorites it is a pain in the butt navigating to them.

Thanks folks, for your replies. I am still in 2 minds about going to IE7.
I have no beef with the AOL/IE6 combination except for saving pictures off the Net.
You only get 2 options with AOL, either *.art (AOL proprietary format), or *.bmp.

All tips and hints appreciated. Further comments will be most welcome. Bazza

    Gotta love jpegs

Bitmaps are generallly a bit on the large side for dial-up

    Smiles Bazza,

Um what not to do after installing IE7 by me :)

When you see the about:blank tab come up on IE7, do not download 1/2 of MG's malware arsenal and proceed to torture your pc for 8-10 hrs straight because u think u have somehow picked up aboutblank malware.

*the good news is i did not kill my pc and made me do the read/run which i had been putting off, pc is squeaky clean.

If you can't laugh at yourself, who can u laugh at :hammer roflmao

Just joking Bazza, I know u know better.

    Big Smiles,

    Peg
