It depends on the kind of programming you want to learn, but probably.

I avoid ruining things by using, or setting up for myself, an environment that makes it especially difficult to hurt the system. For instance, I often practice working with files on a blank disk until I'm comfortable with it in the new situation. You can use Web languages like HTML, JavaScript, or Java, which are checked by the browser to avoid most problems that would hurt the system. You also can use a virtual machine program to run test programs, keeping them from hurting the actual machine.
I try new things in very short, simple programs first to see how they work before I actually use them, because there are sometimes unexpected surprises.
Think your project through to avoid mistakes, and make backups.
Sometimes there is some technicality that crashes the system, but you can usually just reboot. It can sometimes be hard to fix these problems in a program other than by trial and error, or asking around in case someone else has a similar issue and working together or trying their solution.

I started by watching others progam, looking at others programs, and using books about the language to build vocabulary. Sometimes I also started with tutorials if there was one available. They often help when something is hard to grasp in other ways.

what are the benifits of learning how to write programs?:confused(besides the obviouse)

I program so that I don't have to rely on someone else to keep my program up to date and working. I also don't have to look and wait for someone to make a program I want. However, this has its cost in that it requires time and experience to be able to write it yourself. Also, people who know programming tend to understand and use other programs better and easier. Programming techniques also provide solutions that can be applied to some problems encountered in everyday life.

There are some. I use programming environments that check my code as I enter it, and then test it so I can see if it works. My favorite was Microsoft QBASIC, which is available from the microsoft website, but is now obsolete, even though I still use it to work out ideas. It has been replaced by things like VBA, which is part of Microsoft Office. For other languages, there are often programs called IDEs that help you learn programming.

    Hope that helps. :)

a well rounded language would be VB. any C and the punctuation is insane. go to a VB code site and download something visual and simple - change things and run it. any VB book will have code especially the ones that come with a disk. pulling apart someone else's code is a learning tool. I've been using some form of 'basic' to manipulate test equipment in an engineering envirorment for about 20 years and VB6 is the latest. The one important thing to remember? Bill Gates started as a basic programmer.
