    So I'm currently relocating and put up a couple ads on Craigslist and another free classifieds website. As it turns out I listed a practically brand new couch I've had for a year for $350. It is well worth $1500 but I'm relocating quick, and I posted that if no one buys it I'll be giving it away this weekend to anyone of my friends that want it.

    Then I get this text from a guy who says "Please send the info and final asking price to my fiance via email." I email his fiance with the post url and tell her to get a hold of me. She emails me back saying the following:

    "Hello,
    Thanks for the prompt reply.Well am ok with the price and the condition, I am highly interested in it,and I don’t want you to worry about the shipping because i have a shipping company that will be coming for the Pick up of the advert at your residence as soon as payment has been made,The shipper will come for the immediate pick-up and make sure everything is clean up ok.

    I also want you to know that i will be paying you via a Certified Cashier’s Check and it will contain both your asking price and the shipping fees via my shipping company and no pick up will be made until the check is clear and cashed by you, I also want you to be serious about this so we can both finished this transaction in one mind, Therefore kindly get back to me with the following details so that i can ensure you are ready to accept the payment:

    Get back to me with the information to facilitate the mailing of the check.
    *Full Name:
    * Street Address:
    * City, State/province, Postal Code:
    * Cell Phone Number:
    * Final Asking price:

    As soon as this is received the payment will be mailed out with no further delay,Once the datas are provided to me,I can send payment immediately.I will be expecting your reply asap. Kindly reply back with the requested details so the purchase can be completed.

    Best Regard"

    I'm extremely concerned about checks because I know those kinds of situations can be fishy. Knowing that I posted how I'll be handing it away for free this Saturday (in a couple of days), why would anyone want to mail me that? Unless it were overnight mail I guess. But this situation seems fishy to me. I was kind of hoping someone would randomly contact me locally and get it in person themselves, cash in hand.

    Do you guys find anything suspicious about her response?

    Thanks

    I would follow this advice from Craiglist (and would never accept a cashiers check). I'd accept cash or Paypal.

    Do you have a PayPal account? If so, I would tell her to deposit the monies into your account and see what happens.

    Btw, the writing of that email looks like a foreign phishing scam.

    They are phishing for your personal information. Everything they wrote is smoke to get you to give them your name, address and cell phone number. Most likely for an identity hack. At the very least they know you have a job and are moving - so they know when and how to rob you - after they clone your phone.

    If they have a certified check they could give you cash. I'll wager a great deal if you ask them for their cell phone and address first to verify - you will not get it.

    If you take paypal and you do not deliver to their verified address -- 100% paypal will refund the money if they complain.

    Cash only - In person only.
