After safe emergency landing, pilot crashes on takeoff

    Associated Press

BAKER, La. — A pilot who had landed safely on a busy highway after running out of fuel hit two parked vehicles and crashed in front of television crews when he tried to take off again.

The Cessna 210 never got off the ground this afternoon. The pilot, Michael Simon of Eunice, walked away safely.

Simon, his wife and their two sons were flying from South Carolina to Baton Rouge when their Cessna 210 ran out of fuel Wednesday, about three miles from the Baton Rouge Metro Airport, said Howard Ward, spokesman for the Baton Rouge Fire Department.

Simon had miscalculated the headwind, so the flight was longer than expected, Baker Police Chief Sid Gautreaux said.

In spite of heavy traffic, he landed safely on the four-lane highway. "It's a miracle with the traffic at lunch time he didn't hit a car," Gautreaux said.

He said one startled motorist slammed on her brakes as the plane swooped over her vehicle before touching down on the road and rolling to a stop in a yard.

After the landing, workers tried to haul the plane to the airport on a truck, but the landing gear was too wide.

So today police and firefighters cleared the four-lane highway for Simon's takeoff.

As cameras for WAFB-TV and WBRZ-TV rolled, he pulled onto the highway. A wingtip clipped the driver's side mirror on a parked tractor-trailer, then the emergency vehicle.

The second impact spun the plane into nearby trees. It also knocked off about three or four feet of the wingtip, Ward said.

It was not clear what they would do with the plane next.

heres some more info and you can find the video there too.;)

at first he looked like he would have made it he pulled on the road and went to full power everything seemed ok i did not even see him hit the 18-wheeler but when he hit the other you knew it was all over for him. you seen the plane turn hard right and him cut his engine and hear wheels sqile thin it just noses down in the ditch knocking off the front wheel thin go into the woods. if i was him i would keep that plane as a reminder of what happens when you dont account for headwind;)
