Some IBM thinkpads have extra symbols on the keys on the right hand side of the keyboard. A few weeks ago my cat was walking across the laptop and somehow reprogrammed the keyboard to use the symbols on the key instead of the letters. Does anyone know how to reset the keyboard so it works normally? I think its a Thinkpad 450. I've tried asking the cat but she's playing ignorant.

any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

PS: I've already checked for options in the control panel, accessability, thinkpad utilities, etc... it seems to be h/w related rather than software related.

Agree with Nick, it is a combination of Fn key and a Function F1-F12 combination, so you can type numbers on the Alpha keyboard on laptops. On my Gateway laptop it is Fn key (left, of the left most Ctrl key) and F9.

Look carefully at all your Function keys (from F1 to F12). there will probably be additional type in another colour, underneath the symbol. On mine, underneath F9 is written Pad Lock, in green. Pressing the Fn key + F9 locks in the (numeric) Pad lock.

Fn + F4 puts laptop into Standby, etc.

Each manufacturer has different keyboard combinations for different functions.
As Nick says, try his combination, as IBM is probably different from Gateway. Hope this helps. Bazza

I thank you both - Nick2004 - you were right. It was shift-numlock. Apparently my cats buttocks is quite flexable and managed to do that combo!
Something even better came out of this... I found this site! I'm going to do my best to be a contributing member! see ya around!

You're very welcome. Welcome to MG as well. I joined last year and am heading towards 2000 posts. I never thought I would get so involved. Beware MG is addictive. I spend 2-3 hours, very early in the morning, reading questions, answers, and helping out where I can. All my previous experience is limited to OS's up to W98SE. I am still trying to get XP Pro going on my second hard drive (floppy drive trouble is the latest problem) but that is another story. Bazza
