The weirdest 'ecological event' that I ever witnessed was when an ancient sewer pipe exploded on a city block that I was living. This wasn't a spring leak or something like that. The reason the entire sewer pipe (going all the way down the length of the street) exploded was because a nearby natural gas main pipe exploded first. They got the fires out all right but it took like 2-3 days to do so. However, the grossest part came later on - all the way down the block; the raw sewage and sludge was spewing/pouring out all over the place for weeks. *G-R-O-S-S*

It reminded me of that movie with Shawnee Smith which was a remake of "The Blob" the scene where the blob comes out of the sewer pipe. Anyway the sewage was about half-covering the parked cars on the block as well as entering the apartment and condos in the area that were basement apartments as well as some first-floor apartments. I was lucky that I lived farther down the street and my apartment was not affected by the sewage and sludge but the smell on the entire block was terrible for weeks until they came in and entirely cleaned it up.
