Icons are multiplying at bootup

    Running XP Home edition. When we turn the computer on it duplicates numerous icons on the desktop. I changed the keyboard and mouse thinking they were stuck and causing the duplication. Ran Symantec anti virus software, no problems found. Queried the internet and can find nothing on this problm.
    Any assistance/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

    It may be well worth following the ALL steps listed by 'chaslang' on this thread.
    I've heard of a virus that can make the icons move around on the desktop, and one that canm cause hundreds of trashcans to appear.
