Ide Hd

Dell with DG31PR motherboard. Boot drive is SATA 120GB. Have a spare IDE 250 GB hard drive. Installed this drive as the only drive with the cable for the CD drive in the slot using either master or slave setting. As soon as it's plugged in the computer fails to boot up. What's with this thing?? Doesn't this MB recognize the older ide drives?

With one drive, the jumper must be set to either MA (Master) or CS (Cable Select). SL (Slave) is only used when two drives are connected to the cable, and the first is set to MA.

Are you sure that IDE drive is fully functional?

If the CD player was IDE and worked, this drive should work too - assuming it is good.

You may also need to go into the BIOS Setup Menu and make sure your SATA boot drive is set before this IDE drive in the boot order.

Yes I’ve tried it as slave with CD drive. Then as single drive. Nothing works. Go to bios settings the drive there’re. It was attached to an older computer with XP and works fine.
Select Sata drive for boot up. It seems the computer is trying to find boot up from the IDE drive even though it’s not selected. It’s supposed to also use auto detect according to manual. Every setting I’ve tried always comes back to same screen. Cut alt delete press f2.

Put another IDE drive in as slave with CD-ROM master. Installed XP and works fine. However when add the boot SATA drive it refuses to allow boot up from it and reverts to XP drive instead. Just can’t get the bios to save any settings.

XP is not natively SATA. How old is your XP image, and which Service Pack version is it?

 

Not sure what you mean but XP pro with SP2 i have here does read the SATA drives. The manual states don't connect as slave with CD drive as master.

I think I'm hooped with this combo. Purpose was to create a clone for emergency with one of my old IDE drives. Need to find a SATA drive.
