    hi,

having just replaced my mobo and cpu i am about to do a fresh install of windows xp.

i have 1 x 300 gb maxtor sata II (my os is currently on this in a 30 gb partition, and 2 other partions)

    1 x 320 gb wd sata II (2 X 120gb partions)

    1 x 160 seagate ide

i am just wondering if there is any reason to install the os on the ide rather than the same spot it was on a sata.

my mobo only supports sata I so i have to use the jumpers on the sata hds.

the pc is mostly used for recording tv with a digital tuner card and editing (to a different hd) for later viewing.

    thanks

PATA (or IDE) transfers data at a rate of 100 or 133 MiB/s; SATA transfers at 150 MiB/s; SATA 3Gb/s transfers at 300 MiB/s. Even though you can't utilize the faster SATA 3Gb/s speeds, SATA150 is still faster than UltraATA.

While it is true that the maximum bandwidth of SATA is 150Mb/s or 300Mb/s hard drives don't come close to that. The majority of hard drives transfer data at around 50Mb/s regardless of interface.

Here are a couple of benchmarks from Tom's Hardware:

    Average Read Transfer Performance:

    and Average Write Transfer Performance:

What this means is that you probably won't be able to tell the difference if you put your OS on the SATA drive versus the IDE one. Except in certain cases, like a WD Raptor drive. (10,000 rpm)

Good call. I was only focusing on transfer rates, but I agree.
