While I agree with the sentiments in this thread, I would say if someone without any knowledge of the program just went by the programs' name alone they may get leery (usually though a description of the program follows it).

However, what would be the greater chance of acceptance if the program's name is called something like, "Hijack Detect and Removal Tool", i.e., some name describing it's primary function? Food for thought... :)

    Ken3,
Realizing some people may miss the point, I added a disclaimer in todays post that should explain our stance:

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=44124

Basically, we are here to help. That does not mean I should be attacked because someone makes assumptions. Hijack this also says quite clearly on the download page it is for advanced users. This person clearly is not. Hijack This is not ours to rename and is pretty well known.

MA, I saw your disclaimer and agree with you in all respects in this - the guy's an idiot, obviously. I'm not really trying defend anyone, I'm only thinking in terms of first impressions just on the basis of a program name that software developer(s) give it. You can't just go by that alone, obviously. :)

I don’t mean to bring down any of the fun here, but i want to say something.

I really don’t think it is right for us to jeer someone who came to MajorGeeks, got really frustrated, and decided to send a very poorly worded, spelled, and misguided email to MA. Sure it was a bad move by the person, but if you where to pop in and take a peak in the boards for a the first time what would you think if you saw the boards, poking fun at some one who came here, but obviously had problems?

I just think it is out of bad taste.

Yes comments like that are said in bad taste also. You don’t have to help a person who calls you a dumbass, but we still should not exploit someone in our lounge, where an observer can read this, and decide to take there business else were, afraid that maybe a response could be similar to what is in this thread.

I’m just saying, as advice. It might not be wise to publicly mock a person who has visited this site, got frustrated, and decided to send, a very poorly written email. It might make other people think that this is the kind of response they will get here.

    It just a thought.

everyone needs to be respected anyway
if a person chooses to act a certain way
we dont need to encourage it

    it just causes more friction
they person came here for help and apparently was disapointed

because as it looks. . he didnt really need help

if we new what knowledge he/she possessed or what software he/she had
we would have not suggested it, but as we did not, we did.
The maturity of this person is evident, and that 's fact
and wise crack comments only make others more evident

MA is respected here and runs a respectible site. .I do not believe that he would want this site "bashed" for any reason, let alone one that can be controlled

    but thats just a guess

Maybe you should make a page with emails like that and the answers with them. Then some of the people who send those might be smart enough to check that first. but don't title it something like "idiot mail" that would just offend them and make them speak badly of mg or even try attacking it with some 1337 kiddie scripts they picked up that probably ended up infecting them with trojans/viruses

    [EDIT]
it probably wouldn't be a good idea to put up the original emails though, they tend to have a lot of swears, something like an FAQ section would be a better idea

  30. jarcher

    jarcher I can't handle a title

that would just make newcommers not want to look here for help
theyd see the hate mail and go " wow nobody likes this place, and don't get helped"
its bad enough that the ones sending the email don't have any idea what theyre talking about

No, more like an easy to access section that has answers to questions like "Why am I having downloading problems?" and such, like a database of questions that is easier to access than searching the fourm (I admit, it took me a while to even find the forum button even though it was on the top of the front page) it could give links to simple reasons why they might be having problems downloading (spyware, viruses, download managers, ie settings, whatever) and tell them how they could fix it or link to a page in the forum with a similar question. Maybe it could just be a easy to find link to the FAQ section of the fourm.

I do a lot of P.R. and I know how important is it to give the right impression. I pose a couple of questions:

    1. Would you want a teacher who belittles students to teach your children?
    2. Would you refer friends to a place that will only abuse them?
    3. How hard is it to ignore typed words?
    4. Would you like the youth to follow the example you are setting?

Nope I wouldn't want an abusive Teacher; Likewise, I don't want an abusive Student. Manners and common sense goes well beyond the learning experience.

Anyone who calls me a dumba$$ and to "screw off", deserves all the retribution I can muster, i.m.o.

NOT necessarily - I'd want the expert to treat me the way an expert should treat anyone, even if I blew it. So let's make sure the "expert" and the "expert forum members" -- when they respond to you -- treat you in the same manner in which they want to be treated ....point out your mistaken beliefs with respect!

MA - I think - originally was pointing out that these kind of e-mails don't leave a way for him to respond to them in any way....they're venting without any "contact me here" info...so even if he, or someone, wants to reply respectfully that person hasn't made that an option.

However, now that I've read more of this thread and seeing the responses, many have jumped on to something that is "funny" in itself -- but has now lead to ridicule of a person and downright meanness. That is wrong.

    1) The e-mail writer ridiculed and treated MG (or MA) meanly
    2) We think that was "wrong" and uncalled for
    3) We see how what they say is silly, funny, misconstrued and we can laugh or get angry
    4) We reply respectfully if given the chance -- the point is, they're not giving anyone the chance to reply
    5) If we ridicule and treat them meanly then it would be wrong and uncalled for (see point number 2)
    6) Therefore, we DO NOT attack the PERSON who wrote -- maybe the problem -- but not the person -- there's a big difference!

  43. Phantom

    Phantom Brigadier Britches

When talking about abusive and arrogant people the person is the problem, not the fact that they don't know, that's the point. Everybody needs to learn something, nobody knows everything, but basic standards of behaviour and social skills go well beyond the scope of a technical forum such as this.

I'm not into shame and ridicule the sake of it, but a deliberately aggressive/abusive response with no option for a sentient reply, doesn't leave a lot of options. Personally, I usually just ignore such humanoids and treat them with the contempt that is deserving of their behaviour.

I suggest the following - all such e-mails be passed on to those who feel the person was not treated respectfully, and they volunteer to take over the answering of said e-mails. I agree the BEHAVIOR is the issue, but the person displaying such behavior is what you have to deal with. As anyone who has had the opportunity to work with the public knows, some people cannot be helped, because they refuse the offer by their behavior and attitude. I have found that I have always been helped here whenever I express my ignorance, because I want help and am willing to listen. :)

    There you go.

A "wall of shame" could actually be constructive. Obviously without using the peoples real names, or even online names. It would be a device to explain to people how NOT to construct an email/request for advice. But just a thought.

To be honest, most people won't see an email that says somthing along the lines of "I hate you Majorgeeks you suck and you screwed up my computer you A$$holes" and then expect a meaningful and helpful response. If they do expect one, they shouldn't be reading it in the first place.

Think about it. You get a TV, and you get it home and suddenly realise that its flourescant pink, and because your electricity is bad it breaks after 3 minutes of operation. You don't take it back, shout bloody murder at the manager then run away, do you? Even if you did do that, would you expect to gain anything from the experience?

Here is an idea: Deal with it on a private level. This way you would not offend anyone who happens to accidentally read the thread or scare off any potential new MG members. If you find it too abusive that it is hard for you to deal with, I am sure that someone would be willing to handle it for you.

If you can't find someone, I would be more than happy to do it for you. I am sure you don't get that many. If you do, then maybe it's a time to review each one and see what set them off.

Wonder if this post and attack action would be referred to as thread rage? Pretty much seems similar to road rage.
