I am having an intermittent problem with IE 6 Encountering a problem and closing.
The tech details indicate "comctl32.dll". I have done a Search and find it to be on my computer.

The software techie at the office did a check for malware and found nothing and I took the notebook to a tech that I have used outside of the office and the notebook was clean.

I have never had issues with my 4 year old toshiba satellite 2410 as a result of malware nor this Toshiba MX50-M5 which is encountering the problem.
    MY os is xpsp2 Home.

My security at work and at home is a SMC Barricade Router, Alpha Shield, NAV,Spybot, Spyware blaster, trojan hunter, adaware, Site Hound. All required by management for home and office work.

I noticed in my googling that there are 2 comctl32.dll; one is 5 and the other 6????

My version of IE6 is :
    App name: Iexplore.exe
    App ver: 6.0.2900.2180
    Mod name: cpmctl32.dll
    Mod ver: 5.82.2900.2982
    Offset: 00014784

I thought that I might have a corrupt file and googled and found this tool, however can't get it to totally work:
    http://www.nucleustechnologies.com/Repair-Corrupt-Internet-Explorer.html

I get through the sfc /scannow with no problem and then partly through the final step.
I get to the second last sentence:
"Right click the "ie.inf" and click "Install" on the context menu" and then I get an Error...."IEXPLORE.EXE File not found". Please verify the correct file name was given.

I don't know if I am doing something wrong or what is causing this.

I dont' want to uninstall or reinstall as IE6sp2 as I am no techie and don't know about the patches, updates etc, and so I am trying to fix this.
I have never had IE 7 on my notebook.
    Management wants us to wait.

I should advise that when I have this IE6 Error which as I mentioned earlier, happens intermittently; the Error message will show and sometimes the Window simply closes when I click on "Don't send" a message to M$ and other times the Window will stay open after I click on this "Don't Send"?????

In some cases where I go back to check my post as in this Forum and click on the Link for the Tool that I have posted the clicking on the Link will simply close down the Forum and yet in other Forums the Tool window Opens????

I simply don't know what is going on and would appreciate help.
I clean out my temp files on line and off line daily, BTW.

If anyone has ideas they would be greatly appreciated, thankyou for your time.

Microsoft have just done an 'update' for IE6. Look in the add remove programs with show updates ticked and see if you have recently had a new one 'automatically'. Try uninstall.

Thx for the reply, I googled and did some reading and see that the kb931768 patch was downloaded on May 8th and that this one references IE6 and the second patch kb930916 references 3rd party drivers and it was downloaded the same day.

My problem has been for a couple of frustrating 2 weeks now confused and so I decided to post. I have been googling "comctl32.dll" and have read up on it, however nothing is available that seems to fix my problem.
So that is why I tried the Tool that I provided the Link for in my original Post, however am confused as to why I can't get through the whole process.

I am still searching for the solution and appreciate all comments, thankyou.

I just went into the CP, internet options, manage add ons and looked at what have been used and all had names and program names attached and were enabled.

I found one strictly numeric/alpha and it was Disabled; so I Enabled it; however I don't know if this is a good thing that I did as I have never been in this area of the IE Options and don't understand it.

I googled the number but got nothing on this Browser Extension, the number is:
    1131 6B13-33FO-4c 9FBO55-0994CCFA8EB???

Does anyone know if that should be there and whether I should have enabled it?
These were lists that were used and this was the only one Disabled.
I would appreciate your comments, thankyou.

Copy and paste that mouthful into a registry key search.

Well I thought that I should post this as I have finally a solution.
I did a HJT which showed nothing and only brought the suggestion of removing the Google Bar which I did and nothing change.
I did the HJT knowing that the notebook was clean, and to satisfy everyone which was good to do.

I then decided to use my 4 year old toshiba satellite 2410 while dealing with this frustration of IE6 Encountering problems and closing.

While working with this one i noticed that i didn't have "firetrust", Sitehound installed which sits in the Tool Bar of IE6.
I did a d/l from the Fire Trust site and continued with my work, and had to go to a site to do some browsing and low and behold the same problem with the "comct32.dll" started with the "Error IE6 has encountered a problem and must Close " in my older toshiba 2410 which had no issues like this before.

I tried doing more browsing and again the same problem, so I did an uninstall of the Sitehound with its uninstaller as it was the Free version and then I did a Reg clean and went back to my work and browsed and there was no issue.

So I hooked up my M50-MX5 (the newer toshiba that I have been posting the problem about) and tried browsing again and still the same problem, so I did an uninstall of Site Hound as described above that I did with my 3 year old notebook and then started browsing and everything was fine.

It seems that for my toshiba notebooks and programs, the Tool Bar in IE6 does not play ball with Sitehound.
I liked the program as it did steer me away from sites that were questionable, however I can't put up with the IE6 having problems and closing.
I thought that I should post this as it has been weeks that this has been occurring.

    Is anyone else using Sitehound????
    I would appreciate comments, thankyou.
