Problem: when ie6 starts it takes many seconds, 20-60, before anything can be done with it. This happens when new windows are opened/ launched from IE as well. Once it responds it is fine.

Since this problem started I switched to using Windows Explorer for internet access, but when new windows are launched from witin the program they are IE windows and have no link to windows explorer (plus they suffer the same roblem). So things like being logged in are lost in the transition.

It's time to figure this out. I've lived with it for over a year now.

It started after a major windows update in Aug. 2007.

    OS - Windows 2000 Pro, 5.00.2195 SP4

I keep this computer up to date and have never (to my knowledge) have had viruses.

I do not have anti virus software. I am very careful. I run spyware blaster and sybot search and destroy. I use registry mechanic every few months to clean it out. I use Sweepy to clean up garbage. Although the latest bank sites don't allow the removal of cookies. This is problematic. A problem for another day.

And last but not least. I want to thank you guys for this site. I spent the better part of yesterday removing TROJ_Dropper.cby (i think it was .cby ot .cbl) along with other crap from my daugters computer. It was not usable. I executed the malware removal process you have! Takes time but it worked.

    Thanks,

    Dana

Firstly i'm not sure what you mean by switching to Windows Explorer for internet access because Windows is used to explore files and folders not the internet.:confused

What OS are you using? if XP follows steps below

    1. Update to IE7 http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx
    2. Install any updates for IE7
    3. Install Firefox http://www.mozilla.com
    4. Use Firefox as your main browser and Internet Explorer for downloading Windows updates.

While IE7 is a big improvement over IE6, Firefox is still safer, faster and easier to use then IE.

I know there is a difference but I knew little enough to try it. So launcing IE within W explorer somehow avoided the delay. :confused

I was thinking that subsequent Window 2000 updates would fix it. Never did.

I'm unable to use IE 7. Must stay with what i have. I've searched many times for someone with a like problem.

does this still apply with W2000? -------
As far as the problems you are having with IE the best thing to do is establish whether or not the problem resides solely within IE itself or is connected to your net connection, and the best way to do that is install an additional web browser such as Mozilla Firefox, K-Meleon or Opera from http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads5.html then if one of those web browsers works fine you will know that the problem is specific to IE and we can troubleshoot further.

I download Opera, it works great, fast and no delay.

    Now what?

Dana, I run windows 2000 SP4 rollup #1 on four computers (three of which connect to the internet). The only time I ever use IE is for windows update. I fired it up just now to see and it looked like about 10% loaded after waiting more than a minute, I shut it down.
You've done yourself a huge favor by trying another browser.

I looked at this information, see quote below. There is no IE 6 listed in the add/remove programs. I check the list several times. Is it a fair assumption it was superceded/ replaced by a subsequent windows or IE update process?

Also I looked at the suggestion to check the consistency of window files using chkdsk sfc/ scannow. This is a bit scary it found a missing dll file right away. I think there are many updates that may have removed older dll files while using new ones. So is it wise to go back to the original w2000 professional cd?

I'm using Opera but am unsure it is a good choice. It does not display all web pages properly. In particular fonts seem wrong, too small, yahoo email highlites unread mail yet Opera does not highlite them. So it is difficult to know what is read and what is not. I tried finding help for this issue and was not able to, so far.

Okay.... As it turns out and I'm not sure how Opera is now displaying the several frequently used web pages the way were intended.

Conclusion... I'll use Opera. I'm not a power user, it's quick, it's easy, it is working!

Thanks for all the good suggestions,

    Dana
