IE 6 won't open properly

Since this MS Update thinks it has installed successfully (that what it has said both times it has failed) it made me restart my computer. After it restarted I got this message:
This may not be a big deal except it happened (I'm pretty sure) the day I noticed I had no IE -- now that doesn't mean it was the day IE disappeared because I rarely use it. It's just that I had that message the other week (maybe it was the same time I tried to do the M$ update ??) I really don't mean to be confusing in all of this.

But I've never had that "Registry Recovery" before and now I've had it twice. I use CCleaner often if that's the next question someone is going to ask.

    Pegg,
in windows components under Add/Remove programs, my IE also has 0,0 Mb, so I don't think that's a problem. The box next to Internet Explorer should be checked, and I think in your case it must be, because it is opening, just not loading.

I have to ask others for help here, because I thought that the MS virtual machine was made obsolete by the court case which Microsoft lost to Sun. After that, the MS virtual machine was replaced by Java Runtime and the MS virtual machine was phased out. So I don't understand why Microsoft is offering you an update for something I thought wasn't being used anymore. Can anyone provide more clarity on this topic?

If someone else thinks this would help, here's a website on deinstalling the MS Virtual Machine: http://www.java.com/de/download/help/uninstall_msvm.xml

    @ Ken - thanks :)

Thanks for all your help. That is weird about this update -- I didn't click "Express" but "custom" so I could see what it was - so no one else is being offered this right now?

Maybe it's seeing that I don't have it from something that uninstalled it earlier? But I see what you mean...I don't need it if I have Sun Java. Strange.

OK - but you said I could do a "repair" from here...is there something I should do?

    Hi Pegg,
I added a webaddress to my last post regarding the deinstallation of the MS Virtual Machine, which you might not have seen since the edit came in after your two subsequent posts.

As for the repair of IE, I will look if I can find that out about Windows Components.

    Thanks - I didn't see it.
Your site wasn't in english - this one is:

I do NOT have VM (which I guess is already established).
    Thanks

Here I am again. I think Yargwel was right:
only you have to go to windows components before you hit add/remove for internet explorer. After that, the option to repair should be there.

okay, and I have one last idea after trying the repair and that is to try deinstalling Zone Alarm completely and see if you get your IE6 back that way. I used Zone Alarm Pro and free for a long time and there were occasional problems whenever they did an upgrade. I finally learned not to accept the upgrades.

OK - tried this 2x. The check is only on IE (in windows components) and it has 0.0 MB

Click on NEXT and the Wizard runs in 2 sec. saying it has completed...nothing about a choice to "repair".

    And it doesn't help any.

Should I try the "Add New Programs" and find something about IE on my XP CD SP1 or SP2 -- but I don't know what to look for. My C drive has iexplore.exe so what difference will it make to install it from somewhere else (except that it needs some kind of repair of course).

I'm surprised scannow didn't find anything. Is there something else like that to try.

I uninstalled ZA (free edition) and did all the restarts and tried IE (nothing) and then reinstalled it.

I uninstalled J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10 (restarted, etc.) tried IE (nothing - just the "frame" for IE but all blank inside -- like first pic I posted).

Reinstalled Jave update 10 -- restarted, etc. - still nothing for IE.

The Avast Scan had these files it couldn't scan - don't know if that's significant (haven't done the others yet)

Those aren't a worry ....how about the others?

Nothing showed up in either scan although...
My AntiVir did not like Panda when it tried to start up (I eventually deactivated it) but first it said that it found a virus W95/Blumblbee.1738 in C\Doc...~1\Miller\Locals~1\Temp\PAVDLL.DLL
Because of the PAV I figured it was re: Panda Antivirus

BUT -- I got a similar message after a few minutes running Trend Micro
AntiVir said it found W95/Blumblbee.1738 in
    C\Doc...~1\Miller\Locals~1\Temp\V1DOR3a02216
This didn't look like it had anything to do with Trend Micro so I quarantined it.

But neither scan showed viruses so...

    Um, the removal said:
I assume that means to open up Task Manager and click on "processes" tab? I did and there's no "becoming.exe"

I did start>search>files and folders and couldn't find anything with the word "becoming" in it.
I have no idea where I am to find the file "becoming.exe"

It may have killed the files ...have you installed the IE extention on to firefox? If so, you can run firefox in the IE extention and do the bitdefender scan.

  18. pegg

    pegg MajorGeek

Do you mean have I installed the extension in FF that allows you to right click and "View Page in IE tab" ??

Yes - Ive always had that but ever since the regular IE program has stopped working, that has stopped working also. Thats the reason Im finding this so urgent

So - bitdefender only works from IE?

(every time I try to use an apostrophe the "Find" box pops up on the bottom of the page and I cant type one in this post -- dont want to try to fix it, just found it strange)

Did you try reregistering the ddl?
You have to re-register the dll files.
    Start>Run>regsvr32 urlmon.dll>ok
    Start>Run>regsvr32 actxprxy.dll >ok

    Now again:-

    Start>Run>regsvr32 scrrun.dll‏>ok
    Start>Run> regsvr32 msxml.dll‏ >ok
    Start>Run>regsvr32 shdocvw.dll‏ >ok
    Start>Run>regsvr32 browseui.dll >ok
    Start>Run>regsvr32 msjava.dll>ok

Now restart your computer and open internet explorer.

Tried it all again in Safe Mode since I've monkeyed around with some things. Didn't matter if I signed in as "Admin" or as "Miller" (which is the only way we log on in normal mode - and I am an admin)...nothing different for IE or for the IE tab in FF

I restarted to get out of Safe Mode and once again had this message on boot up:

So I registered all the DLLs you said and they were "successful". Needed to restart pc so I did and on boot up I again got the above message!

Still no difference in IE or IE tab in FF (except in FF you see "Done" in bottom left corner and the "e" icon in the bottom right corner that you don't see in just opening the IE program itself.

Oh man, how weird. I hit F12 to boot from my WinXPSP1 CD ...it loaded files then the "Welcome to Setup" screen appeared with the 3 choices: hit "enter" to install; "r" to repair; and "F3" to exit.

I tried this and it was like my keyboard died...it wouldn't respond to anything I tried. I finally pushed in the power button to restart. Tried to boot from CD again and same thing happened.

Any advice on this now? I'd sure like to try the M$ solution for the registry.

I just tried to run CCleaner just to see what it might come up with. It scanned for ISSUES ok but it would not RUN CLEANER -- the whole program just closed down. I tried a couple times. This never happened before with CCleaner.

Before I finally reformatted my pc a couple months ago I was unable to run ANY type of registry cleaner except CCleaner -- any other reg cleaner would start for about 2 seconds then I'd get a BSOD. YIKES!

I'm not looking for a record number of posts in this thread but...

My other daughter just found out that all the regular games that came installed on the PC (solitaire, etc.) are gone.

So - just like MS Paint - things are disappearing that are a normal part of the OS

  26. TimW

Things don't disappear on their own ....usually.
When you reinstalled, is if off a legit official ms xp cd? If it was a backup copy or some such ...the install might have been corrupt and or with viruses ...

Are ye using a USB keyboard?

Also, the add/remove components for IE, will only remove the icon. Within the add/remove components for windows, there should be an accessories option. double click that, and paint and other apps should be in there.

I know this is a minor post, to your issue, just curious.

  28. pegg

    pegg MajorGeek

Yes - it's the legit "Reinstallation CD M$ Windows XP Home Edition Including Service Pack 1a" that came with my stupid Dell computer that has given me nothing but woes for the last 3 years (but those are 5 other threads that I've had). Excuse the minor rant.

AND after that reinstall (after the format) I went ahead and did all the M$ updates and did the SP 2 off the CD that I had and used previously for SP2 (also the "official" one from M$ that they mailed me).

  29. pegg

    pegg MajorGeek

    NO

OK - I didn't double click it - I had it checked and clicked NEXT (is that what you meant?) But it did the same thing that happened the first time I tried this to repair IE -- it says it can't find certain files that are sitting right there on my C drive -- I can see them, but this install wizard can't "find" them for some reason?? Before I tried inserting the original XP SP1 CD and having it browse and find the .exe files there but that didn't work for IE (didn't try it this time yet)

    Below is the error message.
Then I'll show you the properties to spider.exe that I found. So I have it. If I tell the wizard to install anyway and skip this, it comes up with the next error (can't find clipbd.exe - or somethiing like that)

Since I so often can find a program on my pc but the shortcut has disappeared or a wizard can't "find" it or the repair I start isn't working I did something no one told me to do...

...and it fixed a couple things -- but not my IE problem which started this thread in the first place.

I reinstalled SP2 from the CD (without uninstalling it first) just to see if it would do a sort of "repair" -- it only took about 5 minutes to install - considerably shorter than the first time I used it - but took 15 min. at the end when it said "Finishing installation: Performing cleaning" -- I thought it got hung up but then it all finished.

Miraculously "MSPaint" was back and all the "Games" that had "disappeared" along with other programs I didn't know were lost (notepad, hyperterminal, volume control, character map). All of them are now listed again in the start menu (they not only disappeared from there before but "search" couldn't find them).

But they now had those empty icons that if I clicked on them it said the shortcut was no good. But then it found the correct program under C:\i386 (instead of C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386) - so I said to "fix it" and it replaced the icon shortcut and they open OK.

So I don't know if this is good or bad (my kids are happy) and I don't know what that may have done to my already screwed up registry.

CCleaner still closes as soon as I ask it to "Run Cleaner" and like I said, IE 6 is exactly the same - opens up like it's going to work - then just sits there.

  31. pegg

    pegg MajorGeek

I uninstalled and reinstalled CCleaner and it's fine.

iexplore.exe keeps disappearing (from view) from C:\program files and the shortcut I put on my desktop is gone again.

I can find the iexplore.exe in C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 -- so I copied it (91 KB) and moved it to C:\Program Files -- it said that file was already there (couldn't see it) but I replaced it anyway -- still didn't make a difference with IE.

Now that you've gotten most everything back ...did you retry doing the registry fix for IE?
You have to re-register the dll files.
    Start>Run>regsvr32 urlmon.dll>ok
    Start>Run>regsvr32 actxprxy.dll >ok

    Now again:-

    Start>Run>regsvr32 scrrun.dll‏>ok
    Start>Run> regsvr32 msxml.dll‏ >ok
    Start>Run>regsvr32 shdocvw.dll‏ >ok
    Start>Run>regsvr32 browseui.dll >ok
    Start>Run>regsvr32 msjava.dll>ok

Now restart your computer and open internet explorer

  33. pegg

    pegg MajorGeek

They all were successful to register (I had wondered about doing that again - thanks for clarifying)

NO - no difference with IE - I even changed the Internet Zone security to Medium with Zone Alarm.

OK - well - can I get M$ updates through FF? Other than that, everything's ok now and I just wondered about security updates since I prefer to use Mozilla Firefox (as long as things don't start "disappearing" again for no apparent reason - that never got explained)

Go to "Start" -> "Run" -> and register the following dll's by using regsvr32 command:

    regsvr32 scrrun.dll‏

    regsvr32 msxml.dll‏

    regsvr32 mshtml.dll‏

    regsvr32 shdocvw.dll‏

    regsvr32 browseui.dll

    regsvr32 msjava.dll‏

    regsvr32 urlmon.dll‏

    regsvr32 actxprxy.dll

Note: Please try first to register the urlmon.dll and actxprxy.dll and restart Internet Explorer.

  37. pegg

    pegg MajorGeek

I'll work on what the link says to do - but aren't all those dll's to register what I just did and they were successful so...?

Oh - I see that one of them is new -- so I should just do all of them again?

  38. pegg

    pegg MajorGeek

Did everything on that link -- all the registry entries were already in my pc with the correct values (I made no changes)

I re-registered all the values you had plus the doc. had me do shell32.dll and oleaut32.dll.

    Still no changes.

I haven't retried downloading IE7 - I did that once and it opened just like IE6 so I uninstalled it. I'd just as soon keep IE6 at the moment and fix it. I still can't believe I can't repair / or reinstall if from some disk or something. Can I copy the set of files from another XP pc and put on my pc (where would I copy it to?) Or would that just mess things up b/c it wouldn't do what was needed if there is another problem with the registry?

Nothing happens when I click on Tools > Internet Options with IE open so I can't change the homepage there.

I went into Control Panel, internet Options and changed it to www.google.com and then opened up IE and it actually showed that it was trying to go to that new home page - but still was all blank (just like when it would look like it was going to my previous home page but would just sit there).

So nothing has "changed" my homepage all this time - but it won't go to my old, or now the new homepage.

One thing I would try, maybe as a last resort thing.;)

A Microsoft Update could cause "some" of this, especially the IE issue. I would uninstall some updates and I would start with .NET Framework. If control panel doesn't work, http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;824643

Check after removing a certain update and see if it fixes anything. Try and stay with recent or around the time you noticed the problem and go from there.

Try what Steve suggested ....then before you delete it from c/program files/ ,,the whole folder ...try this:
    Start / run and type:
    rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"

    It is case sensitive.
