Random Number generator ....search for that, I have no idea where that is coming from.

The other is a dell notifier ...like a windows updater.

That's a help app that comes bundled with Dell PCs, probably depends on .NET Framework.

    Nothing changing with IE.

Nope - do I start uninstalling "hotfixes" too?

Dang pegg I'm not sure. I went back and re-read the posts, you have tried about everything......I think.

You could try disabling your Anti-virus / Firewall and try IE. Other than that you might have to reinstall in order to get things straightened out. There are so many things wrong, for some reason.

I will leave the "hotfixes" up to you if that's ok.

But now I don't have .NET framework and I thought that was a pretty important application

Ugh - is it me or what?

Of course, IE isn't listed in Add/remove programs so...
I went to the "windows components" section but didn't see anything about removing it.
I can't find it in YourUninstaller either.
In CCleaner it only lists "Internet Explore Default page" to remove

So I figured you mean to go to C:\Program Files and click on the entire Internet Explorer program and delete it.

I tried it twice (with nothing else open) and got this error message:

Do I have to stop some process or some service first?

Reboot your computer and try again ...or first look in taskmanager for the iexplore exe and stop it.

Although ..if it is running that might be the problem ...

In this particular case, unlocker might work. Halo is the one who first recommended it to me for that specific error message, and I would ask him if this might help.

I turned off my pc last night. My daughter started it this morning and got online. Then she said that after about 20 minutes a box popped up and showed that it was loading something (green boxes across the bottom -- filled up and asked if you wanted to restart - she didn't do anything and pc restarted)

Then she got back on pc later and noticed mspaint was GONE again (it may have been gone on start up earlier -- she hadn't checked).

ALL the same programs that had "just disappeared" before are gone - no icons, no listing in start menu, etc. But today I can find them in a search.

So this time, instead of reinstalling SP2 it actually worked to do "Add windows components>Accessories" - BUT that only brings back the names to start menu and those same empty icons.

This is from my #80 post.
All programs got fixed except MSPaint for some reason -- it just freezes up and won't open.

BUT that's not my question. The question is - what is happening that makes these "disappear" and in some ways MSPaint is acting just like IE6 -- except I'm not able to (yet) get IE6 back from anyplace.

Pegg if your going to delete the whole IE folder then the best option maybe MoveOnBoot where you just browse to the location of the file or folder you wish to delete with MoveOnBoot.

But with so many errors and weirdness, I'm loathe to suggest it but either a re-install ( after saving all your important data and files ) or a repair install as in installing XP over itself maybe your best option to repair the damages sections of the OS, as I have a feeling you will suffer weird goings on no matter how much we fix of it.

A dirty install or repair install is done this way, it generally doesnt loose you your installed software and files but leaves you having to run Microsoft update as it returns you to pre SP2 state dependant on your original install CD, also you will have to update many applications but its only slightly better than a full re-install

I'm with Halo ...except I'd prefer a complete reformat and clean install ...you've done the repair before and still get the problem, so I am very much leaning to the idea that you have a nasty that is causing all this ....something is running that you either cant see or cant detect ....if you have another computer, I'd also run a virus scan on all ....all media that you've used on that computer (and I do mean all ...).

I agree with you guys - except when I tried to boot up from my Windows XP CD a day or so ago it didn't respond to the "enter", "r" or "F3" that I pushed so I'm wondering if / why it would be different now if I tried it.

@Halo - I'll look at the directions you gave me. I have some from "Fred Langa", Information Week, that talks about doing a completey and nondestructive rebuild, repair or refresh of an existing XP istallation. I did that a couple months ago and it helped -- kept all my docs and pics intact. But eventually whatever was wrong with my pc made me do a complete reformat anyway.

So I need to buy an external HD (been meaning to anyway) and backup my important stuff and then do this again...

...if I can get past the setup screen when I try to boot up...I really do wonder about that.

  16. pegg

    pegg MajorGeek

I slipstreamed my SP1 and SP2 so I wouldn't have any issues with errors about newer version of XP, blah, blah, blah.

However, when I booted from this new CD the same thing happened as before - at the XP Set up page it just sat there - no matter what I pushed: "enter", "r" or "F3" -- I finally pushed the power button on the pc to turn it off like before...

...so if I can't boot up from the CD - how can I install, repair, or anything else?

    Pegg,
I've been following your extensive efforts with optimism and I've always been surprised that everything you tried didn't work. One thing I can't remember is, did you go through the Malware section? And, did you try removing both firewall and AV? I remember that was one suggestion. It seems like such a simple problem, to have to reformat for, but I can understand the necessity of getting the windows updates.

I did a couple scans (Trend micro and Panda)
I have turned off Zone Alarm and AntiVir for a bried time to see if IE6 opens - didn't matter. I didn't want to "remove" them since one needs a firewall and antivirus.

Pegg.....in your bios, do you have a virus protection setting?
Have you done any changes to the bios? If not, did you try resetting to default?

  20. pegg

NO - I've done nothing to my bios

AND - I'll check it but I can't remember how to see if I have this "virus protection setting" (mind went blank)

...You want me to boot to this screen and see what my OS Install Mode settings are - and then make sure I make it ON so I can do an install??

Same for the security settings? What should I look for there?

Dell Media Experience which I did not set to be a start-up program and can't find where I thought it should be to delete it from starting up...ugh

I've done this before (several months ago) -- so I'll try it tomorrow.

    Hi Pegg,
I had a conflict between Kaspersky and Sygate. I could use IE if either one was installed, but not both at the same time. It didn't help to turn one or the other off. I actually had to deinstall one of them from the system. I spent several weeks trying to work this out, deinstalling them in turn and reinstalling them, always with exactly the same results. Finally deinstalled them and quit trying to use them together. If you only turned off Zone Alarm and your AV, then I doubt it will show any difference. You have to actually deinstall them to see if that's the problem.

Well - my computer keeps "losing things" - now AOL instant messaging won't open - gone from quick launch. I can see it in start menu but it gives an error:

The procedure entry point SHRegGetValueW could not be located in the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll

Actually I now get this error for several programs (WinSnap -- which I've been using for screen captures, for one and it appears on start up - I think it's about viewmanager, Help Center, Ad-Aware, SpyBot -- and I know it shows up for several more .)

    I tried all this again:
This one fails with error : Specific procedure could not be found.

I did all the rest and they were ok except for mshtml.dll -- there was no response for this - no error, no success...

oh - I did the hjt - forgot to say that.

  36. pegg

    pegg MajorGeek

    Here's the file.

As soon as I renamed hijack.exe to analyse.exe my AntiVir yelled that there was a virus disguising itself as harmless (HEUR-DBLEXT/Crypted) -- I figured it was too much of a coincidence so I've been ignoring it -- everytime I click on analyse.exe -- even to upload the log it's been telling me there's this virus.

If you go to file:///C:/Program%20Files/HJT/HijackThis%20Log%20file.htm you'll see my analysis at the bottom -- I think that should take you to the site - it gets me there. It does mention a couple potential issues. But I don't remember what to do. Do I go where they are and just delete them? In safe mode?

I just uninstalled both of them -- couldn't get on IE. Installed ZA first - couldn't get on IE, then did my AV --- couldn't get on IE.

    @TimW:
I deleted the 2 issues that HJT mentioned.

I have no problem reformatting...I've saved everything important. But I've tried 3 times now and my pc won't work with the original Windows XP CD or the slipstreamed one I made. It boots from it but won't respond to the "R", "enter" or "F3" that I type on the setup page...is there a way around this?

I did this before and it didn't do anything...but after glancing throught the article it seems like it should help with these .dll issues.

    I'll try it. Thanks.

  44. pegg

    pegg MajorGeek

The Scannow sfc article starts right off explaning Windows File Protection and that Windows XP keeps a cache (copy) of main system files at:
    C:Windows\System32\Dllcache
I don't have this folder (yes, view hidden files is enabled)

I would think this is a problem.

It mentions that scannow sfc will ask for the XP CD to get files to fix anything corrupted in the above mentioned folder (which doesn't exist). So -we'll see what happens (just waiting for a chunk of time to work on this).

  46. pegg

I ran sfc /scannow 4 times. The box popped up the first time saying to wait while Windows verifies protected Windows files... Then nothing.

    Waited about 10 minutes...no progress bar...so I hit cancel.

I did every step in the doc. you referred me to and did scannow again -- still nothing but the box - no progress bar (and one of the steps was adding something to the registry to see the progress bar -- and when I've done this before I've always seen the progress bar).

After a good 10 minutes each time I hit cancel.

I've rebooted a couple times and decided to do it once more. About 5 min. into a blank progress bar it did ask for the XP SP1 CD which I put into the CD Rom - then it progressed to the end and just quit.

So...nothing seems to have changed...can't access anything differently. All those .dlls are still unregistered with same error messages.

    Hmmmmm
