Another thought, are ye sure that /dllcache is not present?

If ye were to go to:

    cd\windows\system32\dllcache

    and then type in:

dir /as /ah does anything show?

of course, the sfc /purgecache (would remove all the items here).

As a test, insert your xp cdrom. Now at the cmd prompt, do the following:

dir (drive letter of the cdrom drive, found via (double clicking on the "my computer"))\i386\mspaint*.* (press enter)... I.E.:

    dir d:\i386\mspaint*.* (press enter).

For this example, I'm going to refer D:\ as your drive letter.

    next type in:

    expand d:\i386\mspaint.ex_ c:\windows\system32\mspaint.exe (press enter).

Now, Click START, then, RUN, then type in mspaint.exe (press enter). Does it work?

    Yet another thing:

At the cmd prompt: Click START, then run, then type in: cmd (press enter).

    tasklist c:\task.txt
    notepad c:\task.txt

post the notepad entry here, please. :)

Yes - just so we're clear

    I just finished running chkdsk.

    I can't find it at C:WINDOWS\System32\Dllcache

I'm confused -- where exactly do you want me to look - and then how / where do I type in what you said to type in?

    (My CD drive is D:\)

Click START, then RUN, then type in: cmd (press enter).

    Type in:

    cd\windows\system32\dllcache (press enter).
then type in dir /ah /as (pess enter).

This is mostly a curiosity. :)

Well - I'm curious as to what this means.

Volume in drive C has no label
    Volume Serial Number is F00A-B95C

    Directory of C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DLLCACHE

    12/11/2006 8:43 PM <DIR>
    12/11/2006 8:43 PM <DIR>
    0 Files 0 Bytes
    2 Dir(s) 24 billion + bytes free

    RE: tasklist
I did it as start>run>tasklist c:\task.txt and an error message pops up saying Windows can't find tasklist.

I also did start>run>cmd and typed it in and it said "tasklist" is not recognized as an external or internal command.

BTW - at the moment I have mspaint back so I didn't do that one post you mentioned.

    Urgh! I did it wrong!

Click START, then RUN, then type in cmd (press enter).

    tasklist > c:\task.txt (pess enter)
    notepad > c:\task.txt (press enter)

Save this, and post it here as an attachment.

Did ye try, what I posted on post #153?

  10. pegg

    pegg MajorGeek

Still not doing anything other than the same message of "tasklist is not a recognized ..."
I did it with and without spaces before and after the >

I don't mind buying another hard drive considering I just reformatted this pc only a couple months ago.

BUT - I don't know what "slaving a HD" is - and why would I want anything from HERE onto a fresh HD if this one has issues? (other than programs and things I want -- but even programs now are messed up and not opening)

Click START, then RUN, then type in: cmd (press enter).

    Type in:

    dir task*.* /s /p > c:\task.txt
    notepad C:\task.txt

    post it here

The extra drive would contain any documents and emails you may have,etc...

Right - I'd love to NOT lose them. But if I replace the HD - I'm holding the old HD in my hand - don't understand what to do with that little metal box?

After the new one is installed, (there should be jumper that is set for Master), the 2nd one should be installed (after the new one has XP on it) as the slave. Then ye can, with a few extra step, import any emails, addresses, documents, bookmarks, and what not, from this drive. Then ye can use the 2nd (slave) drive as a backup.

Hey - that worked -- only it said "file not found"

Once slaved, there would be may things that we could do that we can't do now ..like run virus scans online that we haven't been able to do ...which reminds me...did you go to the website of the hard drive manuf. and see if there are any diagnostic tools for the drive ...?

I've heard this before now, I just wasn't thinking about what you meant. Okay, I have one of those slim Dimension pcs. Do all pcs have room for 2 hd or do I need to double check?

Another "newbie to HD" question: what do you mean by "should be jumper..."

Talking another desktop? Goober ....on the back of the drive will be the jumper setting which make the computer recornize it as either the master drive (wiwth the os) or slave drive .....

  20. pegg

    pegg MajorGeek

No - I'll check into that

If you can do this (new drive) load it up with the os, and other software that you need (nothing off the web other than MG's and nothing from a non-manuf. disc) and see if it runs without problems ...then when you slave, we can run diagnostics on that drive ...copy over what you want and then format it.

Just FYI - I did the No-Reformat, non destructive total-rebuild option from "Fred Langa" - www.informationweek.com (don't have the full link anymore --I printed out all the instructions). I used this a couple months ago plus I saw someone here refer someone else to this site in another thread just the other day.

Well it gave me grief a few times but it did restore many things and I'm pretty much exactly back to where I was at my #1 post (which is way better than where I was at my last post).

I still can't do a system restore (create one or go back to one - yes, "system restore" is on). I can't turn on certain services either -- there's weird errors there...so we'll see how long this lasts.

Finally able to put SP2 back on the pc.

I'll check out the IE plug in for FF (still can't view page in IE tab).

There's too much going on right now to run off and get another harddrive but that will be the very next thing I do when / if this goes nuts again.

    Thanks again for everyone's help.
