Hello, feranm, nice of you to stop in :-D I don't think I am quite ready for IE 8 yet, still trying to make sure all my 'little' parts are all up to date first... :-D

I see I have an update for Quicktime, and it has downloaded to my download manager.... I just can't seem to figure out how to get it to where it is supposed to be...:confused

Also, if "IE8 disables all toolbars, plugins and other browser extensions", why am I going thru so much to update my Java, (which went quite well) and Quicktime, etc... ??? If IE 8 is going to dis-able them, would they ever be used or turned on?

I think I will stick with my IE 7 for now, and I don't have McAffee, I have Trend Micro PC-Cillin 14... I am just trying to keep everything updated, and working like it should. Thanks for stopping in, and don't be a stranger ;)

I am still using IE6.Why?AFAIK IE7 and IE8 do not have the image toolbar anymore :(.I just love it and it is very handy when I want to save pics from webpages and would love to have it in IE8 or as a plugin\addon!

You have at least 2 options here. One is to get rid of all old QuickTime remains and get a fresh install as described in my post. Download link: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

The other is to update via Secunia PSI:

    1. Open Secunia PSI
    2. Find the Insecure tab
    3. Scroll down to the program that needs update
    4. Click the + sign
    5. Click the "Download Solution" icon from the Toolbox

  4. TeeCee

    TeeCee MajorGeek

Hello Cordialis, and thank you... I did exactly as you said, however, I could not find any of these in the PSI : :confused
    2. Find the Insecure tab
    3. Scroll down to the program that needs update
    4. Click the + sign
    5. Click the "Download Solution" icon from the Toolbox

I did go to that little blue square (on the desktop from download manager) with an arrow on it, and did a right click onto it, and found a message of "show all downloads" and when I clicked onto that, it asked me did I want to install the Quicktime update.... Dah, Yeah, that was the whole point of downloading it in the first place. :p

It did it's thing, I rescanned, and have "O" unsecure programs!!!! :-D I guess I am just not used to the download manager; I am so used to downloading and waiting forever for something to finish, this does work so much easier, I just could not find how to install it from the download manager. Must learn once update is downloaded, get it from point A to point B..... :-D Thank you sooooo much, I hope I haven't been too big of a problem for you!;)

I am all updated, and nothing, but nothing needs an update now :-D

I couldn't have done it without ya! Thanks, and have a wonderful evening!

Haha! :-D I glad you got it solved. And you'll learn to love Secunia PSI, - promise. It's a nice friend to have around! :-D

Thank you Cordialis, I am sure I will, and you are a nice friend to have around also!! Is the 'toolbox' that little blue box with an arrow on it? That is from the download manager... Obviously, it is smarter than me :-D
    Have a great evening! ;)

Well, mine doesn't look like that one! I do not have any of those icons at all!!! I have two modes on mine: Simple & Advanced... Mine has been in 'Simple Mode" since it was installed... Is yours in Advanced mode? I'll try to post a screen shot of mine shortly... Thanks, now I see what you were talking about, but when you see mine, you might understand why I didn't see what you were seeing :confused

I have three tabs: Secure your PC - Profile - Help/Support/Forum

OK, be back in a few!!!:-D

  9. Cordialis

    Cordialis MajorGeek

Yes, you would definately want advanced mode turned on. Just do that. It's not advanced at all. It's a help!

Lord, that sounds like what I need to do, and WILL do that now!! Thanks! Here again, I was trying my hardest, but couldn't find what you told me....
    NOW I know why!!!! :-D:-D:-D

OK, Now I have all the buttons and toolboxes you showed me... That DOES make a difference... Now, it is showing me my "Yahoo Music Jukebox 2.x is insecure.... I never used it, so it should be easy enough to delete, shouldn't it? Or, is there some other program that uses it?

It came pre-loaded on the computer... I have a Dell Inspiron S...

I'm sorry I didn't think of that - simple vs. advanced mode. I should have. Sorry, TeeCee! :-o

Oh, that's OK! ;) We were talking of the same thing, just in different modes!!! LOL!!! Don't worry about it.. :) Thanks for all your help :) I am seeing LOTS of things I thought were gone, and even used the tool for the Java and with this being in advanced mode NOW, I am seeing "Sun Java JRE 1.5; a LOT of active X controls which I don't particularly like to mess with, and the Yahoo Jukebox..... thanks, I see tomorrow will be busy for me :-D Now, I will do some more searching...

I did search with Search Commpanion, but it isn't showing me any Sun Java JRE 1.5.... Hmmm.... Residue, I presume..... Tomorow, for sure.. ;)

Oh, Cordialis, this is fun, and I have to get to bed!!! :zzz I did click onto the "folder" it showed me where the little buggers were, and here is what I found:

    Java 2Platform File Versio 5.0.60.5 Created 12/18/2007
Java 2 Platform Standard Editon 5.0.60.5 Binery Ed. Created 12/18/2007
Java Web Start Launcher File Version 5.0.60.5Created 12/18/2007

Now, I have the current Java 6 Update 13, Can I SAFELY delete these? I have moved them into the recycle bin, but I want to be SURE before I empty it... Thanks , I am assuming this is the 'residue' you were talking about... I did run the tool after deleting the first one, and gosh, if this is all OK to just delete it with out messing up my new version, than I will, just let me know... NOW, I am heading for the sack! :zzz More to be done tomorrow!!! :zzz

Yes! Delete! :-D Java's homepage is not going anywhere soon. You'll always be able to get Java back. :-D You should do a search with search compnion again. Just type Java. Search in all files and folders. Click advanced settings. Put a check mark in the System folders option and in the hidden folders option. Something's wrong. You do have old Java and and search companion can find it.

Unless you need to run Secunia's scan function again in order to let it update?

I tried downloading it and at the end of the download I get a message "Internet explorer 8 is not supported on this operating system". I have an HP, Vista Home Premium", 1 gig RAM, everything else works fine. Using IE 7. Any advice?

Good Morning Cordialis, Here is what my PSI is showing now, after clicking the "advanced" tab, and rescanning.. I did delete the old Java. :drool
Now, my main concern is what to do with what is left here, to get it at 100%

Updating the 2 Microsoft programs is a walk in the park. Simply go to Microsoft Update and click a button that you normally don't use. Don't click the button Express. Click the other one: Custom. :cool

That will bring you the downloads on a silver platter. Link: http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-US

The reason for this is that Microsoft Update could have more suggestions about what to update. In that event you should take the offer! :-D

Hello Cordialis, I can do the Microsoft one pretty easy... I don't think I need to remove anything there... I am assuming you mean the "core services" and tehe "Data Access" ones? I think I'll start with that first... ;)

I have a very slow connection this morning :cry, but hey, on dial-up, at least I am up and running.....

I will come back for the Yahoo one... That was pre-loaded onto my system when I got it... Not my cup of tea anyway...

Also, all that flash... :confused.... Is it possible to just update it? Oh, this is fun!
Again, maybe later I will get a better connection, and work with that..

Thanks, and have a GREAT day! :wave

PS: No Quicktime residue at all!!!!!! :)

Ok, I just went to Microsoft update, and found no updates for either of these.. I then clicked onto PSI "dowload solution" and it took me to MWU, and still, NO updates for either of these.... I think it would be safe to click ignore on these two, as there is nothing, zip in the updates. Here is what it is showing me:

    Critical: 0
    Important: 0
    XP 7: 7

    Windows PowerShell KB926139;
    Base CSP KB909520
    root certificates
    Multiple Group Policy Preferences KB943729
WMDRM KB 902344 - download only if you use portable devises ( I don't )
    Windows Search 4.0 KB940157
    Windows Media Player 11

Absolutely none for MDAC or XML Core Servor... So, I am going to hold off on that, unless you have more info on this for me.. :confused These are all "optional" updates.... :confused

OK, Cordialis, I'll check in with ya later on.... :wave

    Hi TeeCee

Ypu dont need any of those listed MSFT Updates, the only ones of any use to your usage scenario would be WMP11 and Windows Search 4.0, WMP11 is a good update, but not really needed over WMP10, Windows Search is an improvement over Search 3.0 but again not really needed.

The others I would forget and best way to stop them surfacing again in the download list is to Hide them, in Windows built in update right click and hide (forget the option on the online Windows Updat site as Vista doesnt use it but IIRC its click to view the downloads info and tick the Hide this Udpate option)

    TeeCee,

Downloading IE8 is definitely a personal choice. Just to clarify, IE8 should only disable add-ons when browsing in InPrivate mode.

Thanks Halo, I have XP, so I will go to the site and hide them. There wasn't any critical, or important updates there, just these 'optional' ones... I do have WMP 10, and can update to 11, no biggie there.. Even the 4.0 I am wondering if I really need that to.... Thanks :)

It's not a good idea to let old Flash sit. It's a security risk. You shouldn't just download the new. That's why I wrote exactly that. That you need to remove old Flash first.

Good Morning Cordialis, I'll take care of that flash later on tonight, have appts. to keep this morning, but I am just curious on the 2 links here.. I have Windows XP SP3, and IE7. What Service Pack is that? I did check Microsoft website, and found only what I had posted, unless they came out with a new one overnight... OK, must be off to the vampires now!
thank you so much for your help, I will take care of the flash when I get back, provided they leave me some blood!! :-D

  32. Cordialis

    Cordialis MajorGeek

Secunia listed 2 Microsoft programs that needed updates, remember? Now one of the programs also have a new service pack. Little programs sometimes have little service packs of their own.

A service pack is not just something that the operating systems get.

I think it is a very good idea to get that Flash issue out of the way. Well thought!

Hi Cordialis, for some reason, that screen shot just looked a little too darn easy, :confusedso I deleted SPI, and re-downloaded it... Now, I will do another scan, and see what it shows......... It just seemed tooo darn easy , so it is best to be safe than sorry... Will be back shortly.... ;)
