I have a Win 7 64-bit desktop. I removed some pesky Malware and now have Mozilla Firefox working and my network connectivity restored. I still am unable to get IE9 to launch or use Windows Updates. It was suggested that I post in this Forum to seek help. Have you tried uninstalling IE9 and then reinstalling it?

For Windows Updates, there is a Windows Updates assistant tool in Comodo Programs Manager. Perhaps it would help to see if the Comodo program will locate your undownloaded updates. If you decide to try it, open the program, click on the "Windows Updates" tab on the left side, then click on the "Available" tab on the top of the program.

Method 1: Tried & Failed- I was able to uninstall the update but IE9 is still installed
Method 2: Method 2 is the same as Method 1
    Method 3: Tried & Failed
Method 4: Not tried because I do not have a system restore point prior to IE9
    Method 5: 2 & 3 have been tried & failed multiple times
Method 6: Calling M$ will be my 2nd to last resort. Last resort will be a Windows 8 install or Ubuntu install
Method 7: Method 7 actually isn't there any more- but after finding the procedure it was tried and.........failed. There were no 'Checking Package Manifests and catalogs' errors and I unchecked IE9 from the Turn Windows Features On or Off but there is no compatible version of IE8 available from M$ for Windows 7 64-bit (attachment 1)
Method 8: Browser mode 8 failed
Method 9: NOT having a functioning IE is NOT an option. I already have Mozilla.

I have attached a screen shot of the error IE9 says it is getting: unable to detect proxy settings (attachment 2)

So we're making progress, just not forward progress! :cry

For the Windows Network Diagnostic error, try this
And then there is the Fixit to have MS reset proxy settings in IE.

    Greetings, celtic_matt...

If plodr's proxy fixes don't work (and if you haven't been able to uninstall), I'm wondering if forcing IE9 on itself might produce something. You might try downloading the 64-bit IE9 standalone package and seeing if you can get it to layer onto itself.

Apologies if this has been previously mentioned in the MS links.

The proxy settings (or lack thereof) are fine. I believe the issue is that Network Discovery is turned off and whenever I turn it back on- the setting does not stick. There are services that ND requires (set to automatic) that will not start. I have re-installed IE9 over itself- does nothing to resolve the issue. M$ Fixit ran- no change. Even error reporting is failing. I have attached a screen capture of my ND being turned off. I have run the Fixit from kb2289942 and the Dec. 2012 Malicious Software Removal Tool (no infections). Still can't get ND to stay turned on. Here is what I am seeing and all of these services are set to automatic startup:
    o Computer Browser -started
    o DHCP Client -started
    o DNS Client -started
    o Network Connections -started
    o Network Location Awareness -started
o Remote Procedure Call (RPC) -started
    o Server -started
    o TCP/IP Netbios helper -started
    o Workstation -started

Homegroup Listener and Homegroup Provider are set to automatic startup but will not start. Even after restarting the services with Windows Firewall tuned off- they fail to start and network discovery will not work.

    I suggest two things

    1. First Uninstall AVG and reboot. Do not attempt a disable instead of uninstalling. You need to uninstall it. And I would run the below afterwards to be sure:
    2. Now after the reboot, run the below Windows Repair:
Be patient while doing the below. The fixes can sometimes take quite awhile to run. Especially the permissions repairs. It may be best to kick it off and goto bed or do something else. It is better not to run anything while the repairs are going on.

Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.
    • Now run Repair_Windows.exe by double clicking on it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator)
    • Now select the Start Repairs tab.
    • The click the Start button.
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • On the next screen, click the Unselect All button to first deselect all repairs.
    • Now select the following repair options:
      • Reset Registry Permissions
      • Reset File Permissions
      • Register System Files
      • Repair WMI
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
      • Repair Proxy Settings
      • Repair Windows Updates
      • Set Windows Services To Default Startup
    • Now on the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
    • Then make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
    • Shutdown any other programs that you are running now before continuing.
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • It should reboot automatically when finished. If it does not reboot, reboot the PC yourself.
Now see if there is any change.

Hi Chaslang. I just want to make sure I am clear on your instructions: uninstall my licensed (paid) copy of AVG 2013 and run Tweaking.com's Repair Windows tool? I have already run that utility but with AVG disabled. Here is a copy of the settings.ini file:
