IE doesnt connect

i hav internet explorer 7 browser on my tool bar. when i click on it it says it cant connect. i am on DSL. so i downloaded internet exp optimized for aol, what ever that is. it connects. i really want my IE to work again. i was going to uninstall it but a box came up with a list odf stuff it said wouldnt work if i did. so i refreshed it back to default. didnt work. i ran its check connection and it says its fine. any suggestions? i have xp pro .
