IE error at startup

    Every time the PC boots up, the following message is generated...

    Desktop
    Internet Explorer 6 has been removed from this computer. Do you want to clean up your personalized settings for this program?

    XP Home, SP1

    Here's the thing... this pc was HEAVILY infested with spyware and viruses, so I don't even know if this is a legitimate Windows error. Just about all of the spyware issues have been resolved, but this error still persists. The spyware issues may have nothing to do with it, but I thought it worth mentioning.

    IE was generating a TON of errors and constantly closing. After the spyware cleanup, IE is now running fine. I just want to get rid of this error message. I've been hesitant to click Yes though, in case it isn't legitimate. I'm suspicious because it always appears on startup, and the word Desktop appears in the title bar.

    Thanks,

    -Steve

    This happens after setting the IsInstalled flags to 0. But, after reinstallation of Internet Explorer, the IsInstalled value should change to 1 automatically. If that does not happen, manually edit the registry and set the value to 1 in both of these locations

    For Internet Explorer

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    \SOFTWARE
    \Microsoft
    \Active Setup
    \Installed Components
    \{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}

    For Outlook Express

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    \SOFTWARE
    \Microsoft
    \Active Setup
    \Installed Components
    \{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}

    SPD and I were typing at the same time. He's more knowledgeable than I. I know that Autoruns picks up more startup entries in other locations, but didn't check to see if the area SPD mentions is one of them.

    Checking Autoruns doesn't hurt either, you may pick up something the is autorunning.
