this might be a really dumb question, but does anyone know how to clear the list of addresses on the drop-down address bar?

i tried searching the registry, and for all files containing the url text, but i didn't find anything. im looking this up for a friend, and as far as he says, clearing history, deleting cookies and temp internet files , etc... didn't fix it either

    much thanks

    Here's one way:

Favorites > Organize Favorites > select item to delete > click Delete

    For alanc

I don't think that is what he wants. He mentions the address bar not the favorites list. There is a way to clear them but for the life of me, I can't think of it now.

    Easy

Open address bar in taskbar. Right click for properties and click on Start menu tab. Click Customize and the click advanced and click (what you are finally looking for) clear list.

Tools, Internet options, advanced. Under browsing, scroll down to "use inline autocomplete", uncheck box, click apply. Close IE. Reopen IE, list should be empty. If you want to start autcomplete anew, just go and recheck the box.

Apart from some of the commercially available apps to do this job rg. East-Tec Eraser and Window Washer the steps posted above should have worked.

Has your friend do a full AV and Spyware check of his PC? ( with upto date AV & SW dat files )

Here is an editor for the address bar, and it is free. You can add, delete, or modify items in the address bar. http://www.freesoft.fsnet.co.uk/ieedit01.htm
Otherwise this is the correct way: Start, Settings, Control Panel, Internet Options, Clear History...
