    XP Home, SP1, IE 6.0

IE displays "The Page Cannot Be Displayed".

The connection to the network is good. Can ping the loopback address, can ping another PC on the workgroup, and can ping the router/DNS server. Cannot ping websites by IP or host name.

There is no evidence of an infection, and I set all IE settings to default.

I tried a utility called IEFIX, but that didn't seem to do the trick.

I followed all of the suggestions in this thread...http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=84374&highlight=Internet+Explorer

Now that I have the machine in front of me and know more about the problem, I'd like to start over.

Any suggestions? I'm thinking it's either got to be a setting in IE under the connections tab, or ???

    Thanks in advance,

    -Steve

Don't know if this helps any, but attached are the results of the network scanner in Help.

    It shows that DNS failed.

    Have you tried Winsock Fix?

    Have you tried another browser?

I would like to look at a HJT log to confirm there isnt anything there.

    Hey bj,

Here is an HJT log. Also, when IE closes, the followng eror appears:

    iexplorer.exe- Application Error
The instruction at "0x010bede0" referenced memory a "0x00000ba0". The memory coul not be "read".
Click OK to terminate the program.

Alright, IE is now working, save for the error generated upon closing, but I'll worry about that later.

Apparently there is some infection, because now there is an occasional pop-up.

So I'm off to the Malware forum!

    Steve,

Follow the below quick like, then post in the Malware Forum and I will pick it up from there.

    Download LSP-Fix

After download is complete, Run LSP-Fix

Check the Box labeled "I know what I'm doing" and then click on the bmnet.dll file (in the “Keep” section) to select it.

Then, Select the >> button to move bmnet.dll into the Remove section.

Now, click the Finish Button. When the Repair Summary box appears, click OK.

(Note: If the file bmnet.dll is already in the remove section, then just click FINISH.)
