I've been having a pretty crappy problem with my Internet Explorer lately. Flash and/or Shockwave don't seem to be working correctly. After a few uninstallations and installations, I had it fixed. About an hour later, things stopped working again.

I attemped to repair my IE, but I don't know how. I -heard- you go into the Add/Remove Programs menu and click on the add/remove button for IE. I would do that, but... it isn't listed.

I'm on Windows XP Home, by the way.

If anyone is able to help me, it would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    sFrequency

I should have tried that before and/or read the instructions on repairing it better. Thanks for pointing that out to me, robo. However, to my displeasure, it didn't fix the flash/shockwave problem I'm having. x_x

Anyone know what else may be wrong?

Have you installed the updates and service packs for IE yet? Kinda need to know more about the problem... like what it's doing... you said it doesn't work correctly, but it is working?

Try to fix it with the XP Recovery Console.
Boot with the XP CD and choose the option to repair your Windows installation when prompted (press R), and start the Recovery console.

Everything else is working correctly. The only problems I'm having are with Flash/Shockwave.

As for the disk thing, all I have is a reinstallation disk. Not sure if that is what you were talking about or not. If so, then I'll try it when you get back to me.

    Thanks everyone, by the way.

Guys, repairing IE through the above methods isn't near as effective as this:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;318378

    Go through method 2:

In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
Locate the appropriate registry subkey, right-click the IsInstalled (REG_DWORD) value, and then click Modify.

To reinstall only the Internet Explorer 6 browser component on Windows XP, use the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}

To reinstall only Outlook Express 6 on Windows XP, use the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}

Change the value data from 1 to 0, and then click OK.
Quit Registry Editor, and then install Internet Explorer 6.

To reinstall Windows XP updates, visit the following Microsoft Windows Update Web site:
    http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

If this doesn't fix it, it may be something other than just IE, like a third party browser extension.

    Disable those, btw.

If flash not working correctly.... goto C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files and delete the Shockwave ActiveX and Flash Object and then go back to Macromedia and re-download... Flash & Shockwave

My system restore doesn't go back far enough for me to restore it to a point where it was working fine. (I disabled it recently when doing a Blaster scan). My girlfriend had me try the registry edit thing and I successfully removed IE... however, I couldn't reinstall it. I tried for about four hours and then finally put my XP reinstallation disk in. I reinstalled IE from there. However, the flash/shockwave problem still remains.

Also, I uninstalled Flash and Shockwave, then reinstalled them. They worked for about an hour and then stopped completely, again. The XP disk I have doesn't have a repair type thing like the one that was mentioned earlier.

I think that's all... and I still need help. =\ Thanks everyone who has tried to help me, though.

EDIT: Oh and I don't have any third party browser extensions, I don't think.

have you tried another browser to see if the problem persists across different browsers?

Yes, I've tried both Mozilla and Opera. They didn't have the problem.

Do you know what I would do in this instance? proberbly not BUT....... as I am one not for prating about with problems for longer than 24hrs... I would re-install XP as it is quicker and saves time!

BUT remember to save all your important info/data eg. email addys, IE favorites important docs , drivers etc etc

Right. The flash/shockwave items just don't show up.

As for the reinstallation thing. I'm not sure about that, since I've never really done it before. Don't want to accidently screw something up.

    Again, thanks everyone.
