IE Security Update will not load

A recent automatic security update for IE7 wouldn't load. I went to the update site and tried to download KB938127. It told me it was incompatible with my files in XP Pro.

I don't use IE and Firefox is set as my default browser. Should I worry about this or just ignore it?

How do I get rid of the shield sitting in my sys tray? I know all it contains is the IE update.

Even though you do not use IE, you do need to keep it patched simply because it is joined so closely with Windows.

I found two reasons why this update might fail to install:
    1)Cryptographics services are disabled
    2)Security policy preventing install

For the first, go into your services and be sure this is set to Automatic
    source: http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm
for what XP Pro services should be set to

For the 2nd, download the update from here:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938127

then, disconnect from the internet and turn off your antivirus and try to install it.

    Thanks Plodr.

Only problem is -- how do I know whether I have 32 bit or 64 bit?

Sorry to be such a dumbelle.

Chances are, unless this is a newer 'puter, you have a 32 bit.

But use this guide HERE to determine. :wave:wave

Many thanks, brandypeppy. It's a 32-bit. Now I can move on.

Eek! Plodr sent me to blackviper but it's too confusing and I'm afraid to touch anything on there.

And that blasted Windows update shield is still sitting in my sys tray. However I try, I cannot download the IE security update.

To determine if the Cryptographic Services is set to the default of "Automatic" and "Started", goto Start > Run type > services.msc in the "Run" box > click the OK button. A window(Services) will pop-up looking something like the first attached thumbnail.

Scroll down until you see "Cryptographic Services". In the "Status" column it should show "Started" and in the "Startup Type" column it should show "Automatic". If that's the case then the service is set as needed and running so just close the window. But if it shows what the arrows indicate then read on.

Right click on the "Cryptographic Services" line and select Properties from the context menu. Another window(Cryptographic Services Properties (Local Computer)) similar to the second attached thumbnail will pop-up.

In the middle of this second window you'll see "Startup Type:". Make sure it is set to "Automatic" and then click the Apply button. Now click the Start button and then the OK button. Close the "Services" window. All should be set, but to be sure re-boot and double check.

Thanks Plastidust. I went through and checked, and everything is as it should be.

I think there may be a problem with Registry. A window flashed up at one attempt to download the IE security update to say it was not compatible with my system. I had windows Mr Fixit downloaded a while back. When I tried to use it, it said it wasn't suitable for my system. I booted it out yesterday.

Can you recommend a Registry checker/fixer?

Should I update to IE8 even though I don't use it, or am I asking for more trouble?

    Hi

Dont install IE8, you would be masking and making the issue maybe worse, stick with IE7 until the issue of this KB update is resolved,

Personally wouldnt go the route of some of the in-depth registry checkers or manually trying to fix this, only thing I would run is CCleaner and ist cleaner tool to remove old temp folders and then its registry checker to remove any old keys.

What Service Pack to Windows XP do you have?
    Could try this HERE

But also the error code to the failed update would be good to know, to get this open Windows Update and click Review Update History and look for the failed one, then click the red X/? icon next to it and a window will apear adnd have a code like this Error Code: 0x80242006 or similar, may not be same one but please post it as it holds clues.

It maybe in the end and knowing how some Windows updates can be offered and are not actually needed on a specific PC, that this could be the issue too, especially as if you manually downloaded it and it message was not suitable for your system.

Thanks Plodr. Whew! Glad I didn't touch it. It looked far too technical for me.

I just downloaded the latest IE update from the link you showed. For some reason, it and some other KBs went to my C Docs. I'm assuming that will still work even though it doesn't show in my Control Panel.
    _______________________________________________

Thank you Halo. I went to that site and got confused. At the moment, this is what my Control Panel shows:

.NET Framework 1.1 no date Update KB953297 no date

    SP2 complete

.NET Framework 3 no date Update KB932471 no date

    .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 installed
    updates KB953959, KB958484, KP963707 No date

XP KB923789 No date (Last update for XP 19/4/2010)

XP Service Pack 3 No date

IE last update 30/3/2010 (plus KB938127 in C Docs today)

I don't know why some items have no installation date.

I run CCleaner daily and I ran Advanced System Care last night.

I wonder what happened to the Microsoft program that would come in and check a computer for missing updates?

After you download it, it will not be installed until you go into the item you downloaded and click the .exe to "execute" aka run the setup.
    Downloading is not installing.

    Thanks Plodr.

Tried that earlier and again just a few minutes ago. A message pops up to tell me it is incompatible with my computer.

Right now I'm throwing a very rude string of words at the shield. I'm going to ignore it and not waste more time. I don't use IE, haven't done for years because I think it's the most dangerous thing on the Internet.

Interesting. I just updated an XP Home computer to IE 7 today then I installed two security updates 978262 and 938127, the one you are having trouble with.

Good for you, Plodr. I'm still forced to hang around while it tries to install before telling me my configuration will not allow me to update. Ten minutes is a bit too long to hang around for that BS.

    You've given two different messages.
    and
Which message are you getting? Yes, it does make a difference when trying to troubleshoot your problem.

Not technically inclined, to me both statements mean the same thing. I'm using XP.

I tried to update again but the message flashed by so fast that I couldn't read it.

    Other updates are fine.

Microsoft used to have a link where they would come in and check which updates are missing. Do they no longer do that?
