    Hi-

I discovered this IE problem when trying to run a Windows update today. (I only use IE when it's required.) So, I wanted to add microsoft.com to the "Trusted Sites" zone, but I couldn't because the "Sites" button is grayed out. I moved the slider up and down and restored the default security settings, but the problem remains. Could someone please review my log and let me know if there are any problems?

Thanks so much for the help.

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

This is sometimes caused by malware. Try the below and let me know if it helps! This fix is only for the Trusted Zone so if you have problems with other buttons this will have no effect on them.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as TZflag.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

That worked! Thank you so much!!

Just curious, do you know what might have caused the problem?

Not really! There are probably dozens of different pieces of malware that could cause an issue like this. Also user provisioning of restrictions or even a piece of valid software could have disable it on purpose to keep you from changing the settings.

You do have a couple of things to fix according to your HJT log, but as required if this forum and for your own security, you need to follow the below steps before we will work on HijackThis logs.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too (these scans are covered in steps 6 & 7 of the READ & RUN ME sticky)
      • Bitdefender
      • Panda Scan
      • HijackThis
