I'm not really savvy when it comes to terminalogy with computers....so here goes.

A few weeks ago, IE was not letting me use the address bar to visit URL's that I had typed in. I would type them in and the system would then pop up a window stating IE had to shut down...the description had to do with Kernell32.dll. Then, more recently, I have run into not being able to download anything from the net. My computer won't let me explore my files when I right click the Start button. And I can't complete anti-spyware checks as well on the system. Each time I'm told that IE has to shut down to protect the computer's files from virus attacks. (this is all when I'm in networking mode...when I'm in safe mode as myself or admin, it will allow me to at least explore and run these things. Of course, no downloading though). In all cases, I can use my shortcuts to get to a website and use Yahoo's search engine to look at the web.

I ran Ad-Aware. Spybot, CWS shredder and Ewido on them and cleaned out some malware, coolweb searches and a trojan downloader and tracking cookies. (I also have Windows Defender, however, it isn't working properly as it runs into some error and freezes up, saying the error caused it to not complete the scan) Someone I know had a jumpdrive that had the latest also Microsoft update to remove malicious software and downloaded it...it removed a Backdoor program. I don't have access to this person anytime soon though. Oh yes.... I do, luckily, have Hijack this on the computer already. Not that this is something that may make a difference.

I run Windows XP 2002 service pack 2.

Any clues as to what to do now since I can't download or even get to my remove programs page (IE shuts down before I can use them.)

Thanks in advance for taking a look at this!

    Ink out!

That advice wasn't much help with the problem at hand, Katana...

Inkroar, I'm using Win98 SE but, have you tried booting into Windows while in safe-mode, and running all the programs you listed...?

Here's how to do it if you don't know how:

Thank you Flasher regarding the comment before...

I have booted in safe mode and logged on as the Admin., and also as myself...both times running all the programs I listed. The only one that doesn't work right is Windows Defender...which seems to find a lot of things on my computer, but cannot get rid of them as it comes up with an error once I tell the program to get rid of the bad stuff. After rebooting in the regular mode, the problem with IE is still there. Hijack this ran the other day and I have a saved log. I'd post it, but not until I know that it is ok to do so.

Any ideas? This one has me stumped.

    Ink out....

    (I love saying "ink out" :D )

Have you tried using another browser yet. I have IE (crap IMO) but use Fire Fox (FF) as do many on this site, I keep IE for MS updates only. FF has a multitude of extensions like pop-up blockers, script filters, dictionarys, translators, etc, etc, etc.

As far as MS Malicious Spyware app you can downlaod it from MS readily, just search for it.

If your interested, as well as this sites excellent security thread, here are some excellent resources:

Also go to majorgeeks stop spyware thread (I think this is it) which shows you how to configure IE more securly!!

Start with this but I have plenty more to help protect your sys!

Thank you for your response -

if I go the Firefox route...will I be able to play windows media ...songs, vids, acess docs, search my system for docs and such...

Just want to be able to use my system they way I had been prior to this. If not...I can't still figure this out...

I'm not sure of exactly of your expectations, but I suppose. Anything and everything I did on IE I can do on FF only BETTER. Try it out and if you don't like it uninstall and go back to IE.

The only thing I do on the system is download music from my keyboard (music midi), photo's from the digital cam, chat, and mix music from programs I've purchased. Email and that's it...

Like I said give it a go and if your still suffering issues there is a more complex prob. Spyware sweeper is preety good ahhhh and your Windows Defender, goto Program Folders > Windows Defender (WD) > right click on AS SIGS.MSI and select repair, after this open it WD and goto ? > about Windows Defender and update. Hopefully that will solve the glitch.

Ok...then I will give it a go on FF and see what happens. Won't have anything to report on this until tomorrow as I will be away from my computer at home until that time. But I will let you know on this.

    Thanks so much...

    (stay tuned)....

    Hi there!

Well, I installed FF and using that browser is soooo much better than IE...fast fast fast...Thanks for that part!

Now...I'm still having problems with using Windwos Explorer. I try to explor my files or even remove programs in the control panel and the window will shut down stating that Windows is protecting my computer from possible viruses....No Access to my files...so what should i do there...??? Still clueless on this aspect.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Welcome to FF and you are only just begining there are nifty add ons (aka extensions) just don't go crazy it may slow you down.

Look, this sounds like you need to do the Mailware/Spyware sticky and post in that section, there are some real experts in that field over there but you must follow the sticky, that is very weird behaviour:

    Good luck
