   What Windows version and is it and IE8 upto date?
   
   Where are these images located> are they on your HDD or an attachement in an email? if attachement try saving to HDD first.
   
   What is your antivirus application?
   
   Try running IE8 in its No-Addons mode, found in Start > Program Files > Accessories > System Tools, if it works thenm its likely an add-on causing this and general suspect is an antivirus addon
