    Hi all!

Here I am working on another computer with garbage on it. This is another one for church.

Internet explorer will not open, I always get the box saying that explorer needs to close. This also happens when I try to open up control panel, too.

I try each time to follow your posting guidelines, but this time, this computer will not allow me to do some of the steps.

I tried opening up add/remove, but won't let me (see above). I did cc cleaner. With spybot, got alexa related stuff and kuasio.ka, which were fixed (hopefully). I ran counterspy, and there was weatherbug and something else, which was fixed (could not find where to get log going for this, sorry)

Since I could not open IE, I could not do online scans (I have firefox also, thankfully, but not good for this)

Not sure what else to do. I ran hijack this and the other two, and they are attached.

What thoughts have you, learned spyware obliterators?

    TIA

    Kevin

You have no service packs for this computer ...it is at risk without them. You will need to install SP2 when we are sure you are clean.

Please copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    * Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:

    * Now click the 'Done' button.
    * Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    * You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Attach new logs for:
    ShowNew
    GetRUn
    HJT
    Avenger

    TimW:

Thank you for taking the time to work on this.

I want to give you an apology. After posting the initial info, I continued searching online (I probably should have left well enough along) and ran across a posting that talked about an app called shexview, a shell extension manager where you can disable stuff. I disabled all non-windows stuff, and I was able to get on internet explorer and ran bitdefender (found nothing), but could only run in normal mode, I could not access internet in safe mode with networking. I also was able to get into add/remove programs now, and I removed the viewpoint program, all the yahoo stuff and most of aol.

I am sorry if this created more of a problem. I wanted to post it with this posting, but the sticky said not to bump, and I thought that that would delay things more.

    ANYWAY,

I did what you said, and the logs are attached.

IE starts now, and I can open control panel.

Both without the initial error message.

I just started using this laptop at church for our services and powerpoint, didn't realize the windows update stuff wasn't up to date. As you said, I will rectify that when clean.

    Thanks for everything!

    Kevin

There are some minor things to fix ...but otherwise you look clean.
Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking fix, exit HJT.

Tell me how things are running.

If everything is OK ...you will need to install SP2 and then the latest Java:
    Java Runtime 6

    TimW:

When I hit fix in hjt, I got this message:

    Unexpected error occurred!
Error #52 (Bad file name or number) in Sub GetLongPath(?.exe).

Please send a report to merijn@spywareinfo.com, mentioning what you were doing, and what version of Windows you have.

This message has been copied to your clipboard.

I scanned again, and the items were not there.

I am able to open up IE and windows explorer and control panel without the error message: explorer needs to close.

When trying to get to control panel/internet options/advanced tab, I get the message:

An exception occurred while trying to run "shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL "C:\WINDOWS\System32\inetcpt.cpt",InternetOptions"

I went there because another posting I had read said to disable third-party browser extensions in IE there:

    http://windowxp.mvps.org/IEFAQ.htm#IEOpen

Is there something else here to fix?

With the Java update: do I just install and that will take care of the old version, or do I have to uninstall something first?

Does this lines need to go from hjt?
    O2 - BHO: TBSB02678 - {BDCA7AC9-C27B-4D30-A808-9B9081279C03} - C:\PROGRA~1\QUICKN~1\YOUTUB~1.DLL (file missing)

I am wanting to delete aol AND norton's av (to install a freebie, like avast). How do I make sure all of each of these 2 programs is deleted, since I know that really dig in deep?

    Thanks again!

    Kevin

    Here they are.

When you are done, can you also answer the questions I had asked?

    Thanks!

Your logs look clean. You may uninstall any programs we had you download (including Counterspy).

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
    * Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix you can delete the ComboFix.exe file and associated C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    5. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    6. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    7. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    8. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    * go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    * Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
    * How to Protect yourself from malware!

    Now download and install:

    Windows XP Service Pack 2

Your registry was warped ....and that 02 line is a youtube item...nothing to worry about.
