Several problems: IE won't open and no audio.
History: I tried reinstalling windows XP Pro SP3.
Result: No improvement AND I can not activate Windows
Action: I ran the five scans for removing malware. MGtools would not create a log. (Attached are its results. I also ran a hijackthis.log as well just in case).
Now: 1) I still can't open IE. 2) I can't get the XP Activation Window to open. 3) Everything else seems to be working OK.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!
Sorry but we did not request a HijackThis log. You need to attacht the log from running MGtools which is MGlogs.zip as stated. Also you need to run MGtools.exe from the drive that Windows is located on. That is drive C for you. Running from drive D will not work properly. This was in the instructions given for MGtools in the READ & RUN ME

    Using MGtools

If you just reinstalled Windows then your problems with IE are probably not due to malware and not being able to activate Win XP may be due to the fact that IE is being blocked ( possibly due to your protection software ).

One thing you have to realize is that when you reinstalled XP, you cannot get any of the updates that it requires because Microsoft will not support XP. The did decide to allow activation though.

It is not looking like your problems are due to malware, but there is some junk to remove so lets do that and see what happens.

Uninstall the below programs. If you do not find them or they will not uninstall, just keep going.
    AVG 2013
    KMP Media Toolbar
    KMP Service
NexGen Media Player - a modern video player

Now run the below to make sure that AVG is removed:

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/avg_remover.html

Please download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
    • Run OTM.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).
    • Copy the lines from the below codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C
(or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy): Do not include the word Code: which is just a title line of
      the code box
    Code:
    :Processes
    explorer.exe

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [EmptyTemp]
    [start explorer]

    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar
      ) and choose Paste.
    • Now click the large http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MoveIt!.png button.
    • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
    • Close OTM.
Now navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder ( assuming your Windows drive is C). This is where your log will be
saved in the form of Date and Time mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Just look for the most recent .log file. Attach
this log file to your next message.

Now please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Note: That JRT may reset your home page to a google default so you will need to restore your home page setting if this happens.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles log
    • the JRT.TXT log
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I removed the junk as you suggested.
    Should I proceed further?
Earlier, following a tip, I opened in Safe Mode and removed IE8 then reinstalled it. That allowed me to open IE8 and Activate my XP. At the moment everything seems to be working correctly.
Do you still recommend running more diagnostics?
Thanks, Your help has been just awesome.
