Is there a download available for IE6? And, can I install it on top of IE6, without uninstalling it first? This is on Win98se system. Thanks

See: How to download Internet Explorer 6 SP1* which not only provides the installation file links; but also gives a "step-by-step" as to how to download and install it (with pics and all!) ;)

That should work, however if it doesn't; not sure if this link still works but here's a website that used to provide the install program for Microsoft Internet Explorer v6.0*. If that link does not work for you, try this direct download link for IE6. This will provide you with the .exe or .zip (I can't remember which) with the installation files that can install 6.0 onto your PC.

Another way is to use an old AOL disk that has the IE6 on it. Just put the disk in and extract the install program from the disk. Microsoft does not allow users to download the "whole program" (only the install files).

Note: For others reading this - This release* will NOT run on Windows 95 systems, you will need Windows 98, Me, NT, 2000 or XP installed. Also, you might want to visit Microsoft Update after you install it. There have been several "updates" since IE6 was first released.

See: How to Obtain the Latest Service Pack for Internet Explorer 6

    >>And, can I install it on top of IE6, without uninstalling it first? This is on Win98se system.<<

Microsoft's own suggestion for installing any new software is to "Shut Down All Running Programs" before starting the install. If you cannot install it "on top" of your current IE6; then try doing the uninstallation through Add/Remove and then reinstallation in Safe mode (tap the F8 key repeatedly during bootup).

    Good Luck

Compuable--Sorry for the long delay, but I ran into several problems with the computer. I downloaded IE6 ok, but still having problems. The links you weren't sure about is still up.
Ain't even gonna think about using anything connected with AOL--learned my lesson about them...all those disc's are hanging in my fruit trees to deter birds.
I had to reload Win98 (due to another problem) and am unable to use the Add/Remove in CP. It is blank. Had this problem before, but am unable to restore registry as it was wiped when I did the reinstall.
This disc I used for reloading 98 is from a re-seller and has key that MS accepts. Just that Add/Remove have no entries. I have programs that run, but they aren't listed.
Anyhow, thanks for the advice. Just sorry it took so long for me to get back.

Okay, if I understand correctly, withing windows 98, you have a blank add/remove programs issue.

Did you install any programs, besides the base windows 98 install?

    If so, try:

    * Boot while holding the CTRL key to enter the boot menu.
    * Select the COMMAND PROMPT ONLY option and press enter.
    * From the C:\> prompt, type SCANREG /RESTORE and press enter.
    * When the restore screen appears, select a backup dated before this problem occurred and then restart the system. (A properly working registry has the word 'Started' next to the date)

Oh, don't worry at all about not getting back to me quickly. I understand completely. Sorry to hear you ran into so many problems. You might try Googling "Ad/Remove Missing" or maybe "Ad/Remove Missing 98." That might help you to get some clues here on maybe fixing it or finding out what might cause this problem to occur.

Just a small tip here; from someone who tests many software products as a sort of hobby: After Windows Vista comes out, I would imagine the price of Win XP and Win 2000 will drop down considerably over time. You should really consider investing and installing one of these newer versions - as opposed to '98 operating system.

I believe Microsoft has entirely ended all Windows 98 and earlier support, updates, etc. Without needed service packs and security updates all versions of Windows (old and new) even XP - become immediately very vulnerable to malicious attack and can become increasingly unstable.

Even if the user is fastidious about keeping this aging Windows '98 OS clean and secured, it is like surfing in Hawaii with your eyes closed. Even if you are lucky for a little while; sooner or later an unexpected wave is bound to catch you by surprise! The same goes for surfing the web with 98; without the most current updates for the OS, I mean, for the most current security issues that arise.

Back in the day; when it was brand new, Windows 98 was ‘da bomb and all, no doubt about that! However it is actually a very "not very secure" operating system to use these days, especially since several vital security programs like Zone Alarm and others are also recently starting to end support and updates for Win '98 - and other software developers are sure to follow this trend, as time goes by.

Additionally, Win 2000 and Win XP can be obtained at a very reasonable price from auction sites like ebay.com and certainly cost far less than they originally did as new retail products. And the money will be well spent as it will save you many headaches as 98 continue to age. Just make sure that if you go the eBay route, you choose from only sellers with a high feedback with many sales to satisfied customers.

    Good Luck!

Theefool--tried that...only had two entries in registry, yesterday and today. Chose yesterday and screen in add/remove is still blank.
Obviously this has to do with the Win98 disk that I bought from softwarehouse. Although it did have a registration key that was accepted by ms when I installed it.
Reason I wanted the add/remove was to use the work around in a ms KB on restoring msoe.dll...another oddity...in Find, msoe.dll is listed as being in windows command as well as oe, but when I start OE, it says it can't find msoe.dll.
I am using T Bird as alternate email, so it's not a biggie, just wish I could have it all working as it should. Ahh well...
    Thanks for your idea. Jim

Compuable...thanks for the tip. MS has ended all updates/patches for 98. I am trying to hang on until holiday sales and hope to find an affordable (for me) 'puter with either 2k or most likely XP.
Weather here in East Texas has been unkind to us farmer's and I am having to make that buffalo squeal afore I let it go :)
Thanks for your tips. will let you know what I find out. J

Guys--before I do the servicepack, I stumbled across an entry off google about registry. I went to Hkey/localmachine/software/windows and found uninstall--when I clicked on it, the right pane showed "(default) no value set"
less the quote marks. Should there be a value? If so what? or would that be included in SP for 98? Thanks Jim

I'm not sure about the Registry entry. You might consider the 98SE Option Pack 1.0.1 also, pretty big download but it has alot of stuff with it and might solve some of your issues.

Steve--tried the SP2 and no luck. The SP1 was listing 9 1/2 hours to download, so I had to pass on that--on dial-up out here in the country:mad: . Any idea if that is available in a Zipfile? If not, thanks, I do appreciate you guys trying to help me. Jim:)

    The above registry should be:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Even with Vista, what you have is the same as I do.

There should be + next to uninstall. If you click that, does a large list show up?

Theefool--Yes. But when a click on the ones not from MS the top entry is value not set. For MS app's the top entry is two bars, best way I can describe it.

    Just a few more suggestions/ideas.

    1. Are you sure the Add/Remove is blank? Make sure it's not just a blank area, see if you can scroll down.....maybe.

    2. Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information > click on the Tools tab. Have your 98cd handy and run both the System File Checker and Registry Checker. While you are there, you might also run the Internet Explorer Repair Tool.

Steve--No Luck. All display names are much less than 63. Entered some numbers when I clicked on unistall--where it said no value set, I added 12345 rebooted and no change. So I went back, deleted that and entry no longer says no value set, it shows the two bars. AHA. I thought. Rebooted again and ...no change.
Programs show up in TUT and SpyBot...just not in add/remove.

What happened when you ran Registry Checker and System File Checker?

 Try not to be too mad...I just re-read your reply, scrolled down and there they were. Jeez, how dumb can one guy be? Obviously very.
Taking my red face to bed and hiding it. Thanks guys. You've been great.

That's not dumb, it's not suppossed to be like that. ;)

There is a possible fix for that (blank space in Add/Remove). Will try and find it for you if someone doesn't beat me to it.

Gotta get off for now, it's getting late here. Glad we made a little progress.

I thought farmers went to bed early. :)

Steve--Thanks, will look for that fix. And, yes, when the weather cooperates and crops are growing, it's early to bed and earlier to rise. Been too hot and dry here in East Texas of late. Just started to cool down--high's in upper 90's and a little rain. We are better than a foot below on rainfall. Have a great one and thanks again.

The only thing I can find is the same procedure that theefool linked you to earlier.

    1. The uninstall keyname for an application is greater than 63
    characters.
    Solution: Rename the keyname.
    e.g. this is invalid
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\123*4567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234]

    2. The DisplayName for the key is greater than 63 characters.
    Solution: Shorten DisplayName
    e.g. this is invalid
    "DisplayName"="123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890*1234"

I would still run Registry Checker and System File Checker, see if it fixes anything.

Ran SFC and RR...SFC found some deleted files from uninstalls, none related to MS OE or IE. RR found no errors.
I can live with the scrolling to get to add/remove.
Main thing now is fixing the "unable to load OE due to MSOE.dll not found", yet Find finds it in OE and system or command files.
Will let you know if I have trouble using MS KB fix for this problem. Thanks.
