    wierd one this.
i'm trying to set up a brand new Acer Laptop for my mate out in South Africa (we only bought it on Tuesday)

i got it out of the box last night and IE6 will not open anything apart from basic sites like Google or MSN.

Google will do a search no problem, but if you click on a link or type an address in manually, it just hangs and eventually comes up with the '...Cannot open...' error message

www.blueyonder.co.uk half opens i.e. blueyonder log opens up, but nothing else

i've tried using on wirless network and LAN; turned Firewall off an on again and restored to beginning twice!

    any ideas

    Wilf

have you checked to see if there is any additional firewalls + if you are connecting through a router is there anything blocking it. The other reason could be that there could be content advisor could be turned on . (In internet options) From whatever you are posting these messages download mozilla firefox (another web broswer, sorry to treat you like your thick if you already knew) LOL and put it on the laptop and see if you have the same problems.

    yeh, tried fireox, no joy
tried turning off all firewalls, still no joy - tried installing firefox - no joy - this is a real strange one- i've tried changing all the security and prviacy settings and stil nothing - there is obviously an internal Acer setting (but what!!!)
i've emailed Acer but am waiting a response

    What ISP are you using?

Have you tried pinging the site you wish to go to?

Perhaps DNS is messed up? Perhaps the local host table is redirecting......

    Try:

Hehe I bet your Content Adviser is set to those url's and it is switched on :) I had it at work so I had to delete the regestries.

content advisor does not affect firefox and that is not working either. Could your router be blocking anything?
Can you access any mail or anything like that.
If there is not alot on it and you think it is to do with the laptop then could be worth just reformatting it and starting again.:)

Mark Stoker is right - if Firefox isn't working then its something else. Are you able to ping any sites from command prompt? I wouldn't format just yet - see if any packets go thru if you have a loss it might also be your network card.

If you are using Wireless which I take is coming from a router. Why not try plugging an ethernet cable into the router to see if that makes any difference if it does then it is the wireless. No success then you could try using that wireless card on another PC??
Please dont shoot me if your wireless is on built! ;)
