IE7 Problem - I think

Recently, I have had problems using some interactive features of many websites. I noticed this shortly after (although I am not saying itis related) going through the steps of the MG Malware Removal guide.
For example, when looking for Micro SD cards on eBay, the search results can not be updated by using the selection/combo boxes to narrow the options. See image.

I am assuming this is a problem caused by a security setting in IE7. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?
    Thanks Geeks!

Turn on javascript. I'm not exactly sure where to look but a good guess is tools/internet options then the Advanced tab.

Scroll down further to the section that says, scripting of java applets and check what is marked.

Yes, the site you want to work properly uses ActiveX. Since lots of bad things get on to the computer via ctiveX, I don't allow it (in fact, Firefox doesn't have ActiveX at all).

Here is what I have done in IE for microsoft: I put the site in my trusted zone. Go to Tools/Internet Options and the Security ta (if IE7 still uses that). Click on the trusted sites icon, then the sites button to add the site. Next click on custom level.
I have under ActiveX controls and plugins
    Download signed: enable
    Download unsigned: prompt
Initialize and script not marked as safe: prompt
    Run controls and plugins: enable
Script mark safe for scripting: enable
Then click on okay twice (in each window)

Since you trust this site, it will lower your security for this trusted site but not for the other sites on the internet.

I assume you are responding to the new concern I added in post #5. Thanks very much.
My bigger concern remains. I hope the solution is not to go through custom security settings for each individual website that we visit when interactive content is displayed. My family would be driving me batty with requests to add another site.

    I don't know. I don't use IE and can't run IE7 because i run windows 2K and IE7 won't work on 2K.

I much prefer Firefox which doesn't use the insecure ActiveX control.

You might want to download Firefox and/or Opera and see how they work on sites that don't work properly in IE7.

    Update - Re: IE7 Problem - I think

I have uninstalled IE7 and am now using IE6. The same problems are happening with IE6. I have clicked every "reset to default values" button I can find.
When I log on to other user accounts on the same PC, there is no problem.
    Any further advice from Geekville?

FYI - I like to fix the problems that I have instead of downloading replacement applications. I do appreciate the suggestions to try using other browsers, but Homey don't play dat.

I recently graduated the local community college with a watered down version of a CIS degree (AAS). I am looking for suggestions for study materials for Comptia A+ Cert. All feedback is appreciated. Is there a forum better suited for such a discussion?

I am still banging my head over this one. Look at the attachment. You'll see an image that is part of the weather.com page for my area. It should be showing me an animated weather map, but it shows only a single image. I have put a red line around a message that comes up with the map also. It tells me that Adobe Flash i required. When I click the link provided to get Adobe Flash, I am directed to a download page for it, BUT before anything is downloaded a message appears that says "Adobe Flash has successfully installed". Of course I already knew tht it is installed, but thoght I would try it again. I even uninstalled it and reinstalled it. Same results. Any help?

Don't know how you uninstalled Adobe, but I recommend that you use
the Adobe Flash uninstall utility and then
    re-installed from Adobe here

Before you uninstall, I suggest that you restart Windows to make sure that
no Adobe stuff is running, as Adobe specifies. Close any other apps. that may be open.

This worked for me with my update problem.

Thanks mjnc. I went through the steps as your outlined, but sadly I see the same errors as I did before. I even took the extra step of uninstalling from Safe Mode so as to avoid other apps being open.

Sometimes it says you need flash when in actuality you need javascript enabled. Note javascript is not the same thing as java. Do you have javascript enabled?
It is probably under scripting in Security and it will be active scripting.

Thanks plodr. No luck there either. I did, however, notice something. I can't change my "Security Level" for the "Internet Zone". It's always like you see in the image. When I change it, it goes back. Any ideas? ...ANYONE!!!??? :crybaby :banghead

Since you report that things work well when you log on as another user,
I would expect that the installation is still intact and that the problems
exist only in your user account. If I was having that type of problem,
I'd try creating a new administrator account and see how that goes.

Have you considered using a restore point from a time before the problems
began. Sometimes when I can't fix something adequately, I just say
(bleep) you and go around it by restoring a previous state that is known
to be OK. Sometimes a restore point works, but sometimes not and
occasionally the restore fails and can not be implemented. I have found the
    ERUNT utility
to be a fairly reliable and very helpful tool in that respect. I have it
configured to make a daily automatic registry backup and save 21 days
    of backups.

I'd give the user account stuff a try first, but if that doesn't work, go for the restore.
Just keep in mind that the longer you wait, the more likely it is that
there may Not be any 'good' restore points left, depending on how much
disk space has been allocated to system restore points.

    Good luck.
