I am planning on updating my IE7 to 8. I have not found an answer to my question on the MS site, so I am asking here. I guess I should have come here first!

Do I unistall 7 first? Then install 8? Or what is the best course of action.

I am not happy with 7. I tried Fox but it was just as bad in my opinion. I am not looking for speed, just smooth surfing.

I have cleaned up my Dell-XP with CCleaner, Superantispyware and Norton is running so I don't have issues.

And my next question is, is it possible for me to put Linux on the computer, and have it run with XP, then decide which one I like best? Or is that something I shouldn't mess with since I lack any computer knowledge? My son uses Linux and loves it. Any suggestions?

I like simple. Easy to remember. No fancy frills or whistles or bells. I want to type in my page or click on the link and open the page. I suppose that is too hard to ask of Mr. Gates? LOL

Running linux is possible but it is more for the computer savy person if you want to give it a try I would probably suggest that you use Ubuntu version 9.04 since it is one of the easier version of linux to run. You can download the ISO from Ubuntu.com I would then burn the iso to a disk. To install get boot to the cd and select install when the UI appears there might even be a "try it out" option where you just run it off of the cd.

Install IE8 over IE7. Do not try to uninstall IE7 as XP will retain critical ie7 and ie8 files in their folders in C:\Windows. If you then wish to uninstall IE8, Windows will roll back to IE7 since those critical ie7 files remain on your pc. I am unable to address your Linux related question. Good luck.

It is perfectly possible to have both a Linux system and a Windows system on the same PC, though configuring a computer to handle this setup satisfactorily is not really a task for the inexperienced.

Linux itself also calls for a bit more command line knowhow than does Windows - i.e. it isn't quite so user friendly but is much better now than a few years back.

Unlike Vista, Linux does not make great demands of a computer so a good way to try it out is on an old computer, one that has Windows 98 on it perhaps. If this isn't possible then get Linux on a live CD. This enables you to get a feel for it without installing it. A bit more advanced, you could install a virtual machine in Windows and set up a Linux system in that. VirtualBox is easy to set up and works very well.

    Download PCLinux 2009.2 live.
It is an ISO that you burn to a CD. Run the CD and see if it likes your hardware. If it does, there is an icon on the desktop that you can click to install it. It will offer you the option to use the entire hard drive - NOT what you want or to create a partition for it to install on.
Now before you install, make sure the sound works, the video works, you can get online with no problem - it uses FF and your printer works. If any of those fail to work, don't install it because it won't meet your needs.
When it installs, it will offer to put the GRUB bootloader on. This is a GUI that allows you to choose PCLinux or Windows everytime you turn on the computer. It will set itself up to the default. This can be changed so windows is the default. I have mine set up on the off chance my husband fires up my computer to use my printing program. I turn on the computer, walk away and in about 30 seconds, windows 2K fires up if I'm not there to select linux, windows 2k or windows XP.

You may just want to try linux to see how well surfing is in it. You don't need all the security programs you have running in windows.

    Grab the ISO here

click on one of the US download links. It is close to 700MB so it will take awhile to download.

You can run the live CD without installing. Something I encourage you to do. Kick the tires, surf with it, look it over and start asking questions about it in the Linux part of the forum.

I've found it to be one of the more user-friendly distros out there.
