Stats: Acer Aspire 3680, Vista, 2 GB RAM, IE 8, and dialup.

I have dialup because it is all I can get here. It's not my choice.

Problem: 60-70% of the time if I open a site in a new tab, it churns for a long time and then displays "Internet Explorer could not open this page". Sometimes it snaps out of it by refreshing, sometimes not. If I stay connected more than an hour or so, I frequently get the popup message "internet explorer has stopped working" and if I close it by that popup, it will (grudgingly) recover all the pages that were running (typically 2 or 3).

I know there are default settings for IE, but I'm wondering if these settings can be tweaked so that I have half a chance of actually checking my yahoo mail, my ebay, etc, without refreshing everything a dozen times.

In a perfect world, there would be an option in IE to 'dumb it down' for us cavemen that have dialup... fewer graphics and animation, and for the love of God, no flash player junk!

I would be happy to receive any guidance or suggestion you may have.

    Hi

Just a few things to try,

    1. If you have any toolbars installed, like Google, Live etc then uninstall them.

    2. Give your Temp and Cookies a small cleanup, CCleaner is good for this.

    3. Reset IE settings, open IE and goto, Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab and click Reset, then reopen IE.

    4. Try IE in its Safe Mode version as an add-on maybe causing the crashes, to find the safe mode version, click Start and in the Start Search box type internet and in the list will be Internet Explorer (no-addons) click that and see if this helps, if it does then you have an add-on thats causing this, and will post steps to find which one if IE works okj in this mode.

    5. Could turn off a few things in IE8 to see if they help,
    • Turn Off Smart Screen Filter (Tools > SmartScreen Filter),
    • Turn off Slices and Feeds (Tools > Internet Options > Content Tab and click Settings next to Feeds then untick everything)
    • Turn off a few Multimedia settings (Tools > Internet Options > Advanced Tab and under Multimedia, try unticking a few options and see if they help)

    6. Try an alternate browser to see if the issue is not fully IE8, try Opera or Firefox

    7. Try and see if a DUN tweaker (Dun = Dial Up Network) and this one is good http://majorgeeks.com/TweakDUN_d497.html

    8. Rare but re-registering this dll can help, click Start and in the Start Search box type CMD, then when it shows in the list right click it and choose Run as Administrator then type this into the command line and hit enter regsvr32 actxprxy.dll (do note a space between 2 and a)
