    Hi everyone,

I'm having an issue where Iexplore.exe will run 2 or 3 copies of itself in the task manager but I have no browsers running. My first attempts before I found this forum were to run SAV and MBAM both of which found nothing. Another odd thing that happens is that I will hear random audio snippets of advertisements and will have an IE pop-up with an ad every so often. It also will reduce my volume to 0% as if it's trying to hide the fact that there's random audio playing in the background.

Anyway, I've read the Windows XP clean up thread and have done everything on there and will be attaching the logs here. I apologize in advance as I ran SUPERAntiSpyware twice before I realized that the thread said to just run it once.

Thank you in advance for your valuable help!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You have a Master Boot Record (MBR) infection as shown by the below to files seen running in your process list:
    C:\System Volume Information\Microsoft\services.exe
    C:\System Volume Information\Microsoft\smss.exe

We need to see the below log before creating a fix.
    • Download bootkit_remover.rar
    • Click the underlined DOWNLOAD text to download the file and save it to your Desktop.
    • You then need to extract the remover.exe file from the RAR using a program capable of extracing RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can use 7-Zip
    • After extracing remover.exe to your Desktop, double click the remover.exe file to run the program.
    • Attach or post inline here, the output from remover.exe

Please try to copy and paste text info in the future or create a text log and attach. Snapshots (while better than nothing) require us to have to type text which could be prone to errors. ;) Command prompt window text can be copied to the clip board by right click on the top bar of the window and using the Edit commands to Mark, Copy, and Paste.

Now - please do the following:

    • Click Start, Run then copy and paste the below into the Run box and click OK.
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\remover.exe" fix \\.\PhysicalDrive0
    • Now reboot your PC and after reboot continue with the below instructions.
    • Disable System Restore on all drives.
    • Look for the below folder and if if it sill exists, delete it.
      • C:\System Volume Information\Microsoft
    • Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

      Then attach the below logs:
      • the bkrlog.txt file created in your root folder which is C:\
      • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Oops, sorry about that, I'll make sure I do that next time!

Ok, so I tried to delete the folder that you specified but it says access denied. I tried doing it in Safe Mode as well, but got the same result. On the bright side, I haven't seen the Iexplore.exe in the task manager so far.

I believe there was a type of application that unlocked folders for deletion but I'm not going to be installing anything while you guys are helping me troubleshoot this unless specified to.

    Thanks again!

Is System Restore disabled as I requested. Double check.

Sorry about the wait, the machine was a work machine that I didn't have access to last night.

Yep, I disabled System Restore like you requested.

Okay then attach the new MGlogs.zip file. Ignore the request for the bkrlog.txt because I did not have you create it.

Ugh, didn't want to bump this with a second post, but just wanted to let you know that I found a way to delete the folder. I had to give my profile extra permissions to delete it.

Once I did that, I ran the MGtools like you said and attached the output.

Thanks again for all your help! :)

You're welcome. Your logs are clean.

You should just uninstall the below outdated Sun Java version:
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. Make sure you now turn System Restore back on.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
