    If it moves, shoot it.

..and I hope to get myself an elk this Fall too.

Hubby took me out on shooting practice a couple of weekends back. I had never even held any type of gun before let alone shot one. Did pretty good with his high-powereed rifle. Had myself a bullseye on a 3" ceramic tile at 80 yds by the fourth shot.

Watch out elk...here I come

I cant believe you guys could hurt an animal, then eat it,why dont you go to Mcdonalds like civilized people. :D

Trust me...there is nothing civilized about eating at McDonalds... with the kiddy parties and teenagers....don't parents teach kids manners anymore? ;)

No animals were hurt during the fabrication of the McDonald's hamburger:D

Good shooting! But watch out. Buck fever will make your hands shaky and sweaty and concentration will be tough. That big elk will be a much harder target than the little ceramic tile. ;)

Yeah GT...you ain't the first to tell me that either! But I did enjoy the fact that my worst shot was 2" off the tile, whereas my hubby's, who has been shooting since he was 12 years old, was 3" off the tile....and that was his BEST shot *grins*

I have 200 cows at my ranch now which are all going to get knocked in the head at the killers and you may even eat one of them at McDonalds.

Good shooting Lev! But I agree with G.T. about buck fever . . . I totally forgot to breath the instant that magnificient beast came into range, and didn't realize it untill my lungs started to hurt . . . came as quite a shock lol. I won't even mention the keystone cop interlude with my single shot 12 guage when I tried to pull my only other shell from it's butt storage tube . . . I flipped it totally out of my blind and it went skipping off among the leaves . . . good thing my target was down for the count.
It was a great hunting weekend - the best I ever spent with my elder brother (now deceased). I was never that serious about hunting (hence my only having two shells . . . I had five, but shot two to target - and gave one away), it was just a way to spend time with my brother. But by golly, when that 6-pointer came into view, I was stricken with classic buck fever. I'm still infected. :)

Nobody goes hunting big game with a 12 gauge shotgun and you'd have to be 3 feet away from an elk to kill it with one.

Hehe...he did say he wasn't serious about hunting ;)

Our son-in-law, on the other hand, is very serious. He does both rifle and bow hunting...deer, elk, bear and grouse (not with a rifle tho!). Now he's learning how to stuff them.....I mean stuff them to put them on walls...not to eat ;) He's mastered the art of 'framing' the antlers...he even makes things out of them now like candle holders, lamps, fireplace tool sets. It's quite impressive!

In some states, Illinois included (where I'm from) they don't allow deer hunting with long range high powered rifles. You can use a shotgun with solid slugs. A sabot slug from a 12 gauge DOES pack a whallop, but it doesn't have the range or accuracy of a good rifle.

Amen to that, however, a magnum slug in a .12 gauge will make quite a mess of all that good deer meat... ;)

As an aside wuzn't the animal in the sign a Moose? :D

Vegetarian, or just don't like the front end of the meat process?

Not an elk - white-tailed deer. I should have made that plain, I guess. Deer are the biggest game I've hunted - and they are everywhere in Indiana.

I've also hunted with a muzzle-loader (50 cal round ball). No quick reload with that! ;)
