    Nice post jarcher.

I think similar, I'm not a religious person at all BUT I do listen to all sides and arguments and wont discount your beliefs as right or wrong, thats your choice in what GOD you wish to believe in.. and believing in something is a good thing it gives some people a goal or focus in life. What I do object to is someone trying to ram their beliefs down others thoats as being the one and only option! its not and those two religions are the noobies of the religious area!

History of religions is one thing that does interest me, but those religions are the old ones... eg. the Hinduism, Zoroastrianism evem to some point the Egyptians ( those pyramids still baffle me as to who constructed them ) Kemetic religion.

who are we to decide what is good or evil?
it all goes down to ones beliefs. .

    the question itself is bias
no matter how you vote the question is:

    Do you have judaic/christiain beliefs?

no matter the answer it would still be yes

doesnt Jehovah start with an "I"?

the bible (being true or not) still teaches valuble lessons in life
    i.e.

Adam and Eve with the fruit:

if your told not to do something. .dont do it
if there is a choice to be made, make the right one. .or suffer the repercussions
if a woman wants you to do something . . .think with your big brain and not the little one
    etc. . . .
well maybe not the last one. . .

but you get what I am saying

In the 30's a tribe in the Congo was found to be worshipping a Vick's bottle that someone had discarded. The tribe thought due to it's smell and color that it was magic and mystical. It brought peace, unity and hope to these people. Was that a bottle a God?

Really -- it comes down to MY beliefs? What about your beliefs? What about Hitlers beliefs? What about Mother Theresa's beliefs?

    Okay then....

Why not? -- the first person decided something wasn't right (evil) -- what if you believe differently?

You just said, "who are we to decide what is good or evil?"
Um, who decides which choice is right or wrong? Who decides what the repercussions are? Who decides who gets or doesn't get the repercussions?

Hmmm, see - something, someone outside of YOU, outside of one society, has to ultimately make that right/wrong and good/evil decision.

thats my point. . .each society trys to instill "values" upon each other
Yes. .I do belive in God. . . .But do I believe it is right to force it on others?
    no
the bible says to spread the word of god
people speak only after the death

Hitler thought he was right, along with many others, and his beliefs made him a very powerful man
    so why was he wrong?
don't get me wrong, I don't agree with him
but he was wrong because the majority believed him wrong

but no one is right and no one is wrong when it comes to beliefs
one can only be wrong when it comes to science(facts)
    1+1=2 (right) 2+3=9(wrong)

a group of people( lets say christianity) gets together and kills a buch of peopl in the name of GOD
    yea. . there christians
acording to that belief that was wrong though the crusades still happened

the war we are in now
started with the muslims and the jews over there because they both think there right

and in both of those beliefs there wrong for killing

when a group of people who believe one thing are so close minded that they kill to make there point thats just stupid

    people value emotion over logic
    logic doesn't cause problems

peoples values get corrupted by interpitation, they think there right doing good when all it does is cause pain and chaos

every choice a person makes has an outcome
and if that outcome is not that which is desired
then it was a wrong one

    Christian, Jewish, Buddist<Muslim,Hindi

each culture teaches its own lessons, its own way

that whol adam and eve fore mention was only an example of the lessons
a group sets as an example. . .

i wish you hadn't given God the name 'Jehovah'. there are many religions in this world, but only one true God. IMO its the name calling that separates the religions, and therefore the people. besides which, contrary to popular belief, Jehovah isn't a name, let alone Gods name. its a phrase and it means "I am", which is what God answered when moses asked Him who He was. i am a Christian, and i believe that right and wrong are written on ones heart, not in the law books, the bibles, the Koran, etc. i vote for God, and i do it EVERY DAY.

I'm sorry but Hitler wasn't wrong because the MAJORITY thought he was wrong -- I'm sure he found a majority of support in some group he was with at some time....using a majority decision for the basis of right and wrong would be basing decisions on emotion and beliefs that may come and go.

What he did was wrong (period). It's a FACT -- devaluing life and taking away homes and jobs, separating families and killing people are WRONG -- why? It's MORALLY wrong.

There has to be a standard of what is right and wrong (absolute truth) that is separate from people otherwise the standard is situational -- based on the society, religion, majority, emotions, etc. If it's true that it must come from outside of people, where does the standard come from?

Here's some logic for you: If there's not a standard like that than you can't say certain things you have said as a basis for judgment and decision making. You can't state them as "truth". They can be opinions -- but only that. For instance:
In your first statement, you're trying to "impose your value system" on other people who may not agree with you. Who are you to say that that statement you made is right? RE: Second statement: Who is to decide what "closed minded" is? What are you basing that on? If it's just an opinion, then that only means so much really (emotions) Also -- why do you say in the last statement that the outcome would be the "wrong one"? So what if the outcome isn't what they desired? What if it's the outcome someone else desired? Then for that person it's the right one!

So the very same action can be right for one person and wrong for another? (yep, several of you can give me examples of actions like that -- but all of you can give hundreds of examples where specific actions have been decided by others to be right or wrong with consequences -- speeding, number of days you go to school, paying taxes, hours you clock in at work, language you use in front of others, how old you are to vote - to buy cigarettes - to buy liquor, what lane to drive in, etc. ad nauseaum).

So - we might not like it, but I totally agree with you that every choice a person makes has an outcome -- someone (parent, friend, spouse, executive branch of the government, principal, boss) has set a standard you must live by or suffer the consequences. Then - as an individual one must set your own standards too (this is where your own "belief/religion" system can come into play). You can sincerely believe something which isn't true however.

TRUTH and what is "morally right and wrong" can't fluctuate society by society, century by century, ruler by ruler -- there must be absolute truth given by someone other than a man that transcends time and stands the test of time and that applies to all people living everywhere (and the truth doesn't change by majority vote or by the way you "feel" about something).

I am not saying I am right nor wrong, about anything.

  24. Maxwell

    Maxwell Folgers

Actually 1+1=10 :p binary arithmetic. I'm sure it will be possible to define a mathematic where 2+3=9 is correct.

Scientific belief can be wrong as well despite the facts. For example Newton argued and believed that light travels as particles (corpuscles he called them) whereas Maxwell showed that it was possible to describe light using wave theory. Experiments can show both aspects of light. However, neither accounted for current interpretation of light as a wave-particle duality or as a wave of probability. Even now, this may not be the "correct" interpretation but it is one that fits the facts until some new fact in the future causes the scientific community to change its "beliefs".

Essentially, science is a set of consistent theories shown to fit facts and one can call these theories beliefs. The main problem is that it is impossible to prove the negative until some natural fact does not fit the theory. However, the usefulness is where the theory can be used for prediction which cannot be said for a number of religious beliefs. This argument can be further extend along the lines of what is religion? and why do we need it?...

By the way, I would also vote for neither of the mythological beings that you offer as a poll.

  25. jarcher

    jarcher I can't handle a title

I did say science facts, not science theory

theory is based on facts or ideas
    facts are based on facts
if a fact can be proven wrong, then it wasn't a fact to begin with

    but yea. . . .

    myth to whom?

  26. Maxwell

    Maxwell Folgers

I disagree, the negation of a fact is a fact in itself, i.e., a contraindication.

However, you mention proof this is a constructive argument based on facts, this is what mathematical or scientific theories are. Now, it is a good question whether a constructive proof or theory is a fact or not. From a mathematical standpoint I say that it is in the context of mathematics theorems, proofs or what have you. Whether this can be extended to cover all of "science" is questionable..

Going back to mathematical proofs, as a mathematician and having studied logic in my final year at university the basis of facts are axioms for a theory and the steps in a proof are usings rules that combine axioms. These rules are "meta-facts" or axioms in their own right. Interestingly enough there exist theorems in a closed set of axioms that cannot be provable, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godels_Incompleteness_Theorem

To those that don't necessarily believe the existence.
