I am running Windows 98 2nd edition on my daughter's computer. Every time I click on the start button, it says this program has performed an illegal operation and needs to shut down. When I click on the details it says that Explorer has performed a general protection fault in module <unknown> 0000:0000094f.

So I am not able to go anywhere without this coming up and shutting down.

I have run adaware and spybot and do not show any viruses.

If I reinstall the windows operating system, my daughter will lose everything on the computer.

    Any suggestions?
    I'm lost.

    Thanks

Problems like this are rarely caused by malware (but it is not impossible that it is malware), so we may wind up moving this to the Software Forum. But for now see if you can open an MS DOS command prompt (hopefully there is an icon for it on your Desktop since you cannot click on Start), then from the command prompt type the below:

    sfc /scannow

How much is on the computer and do you have anyway to make backups of what you need?

Can you run programs on the computer by clicking on icons on the Desktop?

Do you have the ability to run the READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support sticky thread procedures on it?
