My desktop icons and start bar keep disappearing and reappearing. I have ran some scans with Trend Micro's online scan and Spybot Search and Destroy and had a trojan . I have been reading here for hours and still don't now where to begin.

I have downloaded all 5 of the tools you guys have reccomended but have not installed or run them yet. I started to do some clean up of the add/remove program list of things that should not be there.

I have also downloaded Java Update but have not run it. I still need to remove the older versions and thus lies my problem, I don't want to reboot and ruin any work I have done so far or screw it up worse.

I also can't unhide hidden folders because everytime I try it disappears before I can uncheck the boxes.

Hopefuly someone can understand all this and maybe help me through this mess.

Thanks in advanced for any help.
    Luv2Burn

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Why are you afraid to reboot? You are going to have to reboot at some point? You can skip installing the new Java, and don't worry about unhiding files for now but you need to continue on with the other steps and following them exactly as written. Until complete the steps and attach the requested logs, there is nothing we can do for you.

I am almost done, just have to run MGtools. So far all the visual problems have gone away . It's nice to not have to use the Task Manager to navigate windows :)

Please disable Spybot's Teatimner as requested in the READ & RUN ME. See this: How to disable Spybot's TeaTimer

Using illegal software (especially protection software) will compromise your security. You should not use the below
    Code:
    "C:\Program Files\"
    KASPER~1.325 Mar 22 2008 "KASPERSKY INTERNET SECURITY7.0.1.325(WITH LIFETIME KEY)by tici"
Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it.

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I just have some more questions maybe you could answer.

    - About the Clock still being in 24hr mode
    - Is it safe to create a restore point now
    - What are some recommended protection software I should use (buy)
    - Are all the SQM Files in my C: normal to have (screenshot of C: is attached)
    - Is creating a backup cd easy to do

    Luv2Burn,
    Once again Thanks

Because you did not disable Spybot's Teatimer (the first thing I requested). The fix did not work. You need to do all of it again after disabling Teatimer.

You can use the below to fix the 24 hr clock; however, it may go back to 24 hr mode when ComboFix is run again. This happens if ComboFix does not run properly. Could also be due to Teatimer interference with ComboFix.

You can fix your clock from Control Panel ->Regional and Language Options and then on the Regional Options tab click the Customize button then on the next form click the Time tab. Then change the Time format to what you want. It explains there what the lower case and upper case letters will do. Upper case H is giving you 24 hour clock settings.

They are not malware. They are due to running Microsoft's Windows Live Messenger and enabling the Customer Experience Improvement Program. They will just keep appearing if you delete them unless you disable this. Open your Windows Live Messenger, go to Help -> Customer Experience Improvement Program and turn it off. Then delete the SQM files.

Looks better but you may have missed a few things with the HijackThis fix also you missed uninstalling a couple things in step 1 of the READ ME.

    First uninstall the below programs:
    Need2Find Bar
    Viewpoint Media Player

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4EFB-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_02\bin\jusched.exe"
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)
    O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0002-ABCDEFFEDCBA} -
    O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0003-ABCDEFFEDCBA} -
    O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0005-ABCDEFFEDCBA} -

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it.

    Then attach the below log:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Okay we will do it with the below.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixNF.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Your logs will be clean after doing the above.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. You can uninstall SUPERAntiSpyware now.
    2. We recommed you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware as a scanner. It uses no resources except a little disk space until you run a scan.
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop & renamed it like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\cf" /u
        • Notes: The space between the cf" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\cf folder from combofix.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    7. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    8. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    9. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    10. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Well all seems to be good now thanks to you and the forum. I would really like to thank you for all the help and time you have gave to me. I think after this experience I will be much more careful about how I surf the net and about keeping my protection up to date and scanning on a regular basis.

    Thanks Alot,
