I'd like to know how to find the default font used on a PC.

My laptop's default font is much better, and easier to read, than her COMPAQ desktop ( I coudn't talk her into a laptop :D )
I have checked out various parts of Control panel but can't find anything relevant.

I can't remember all the specs on her PC, but it is an AMD 64 processor 3500+ (?), 1 gig of RAM, 200 gig HDD, XP home with Sp2 ( and no updates--that is the first broadband project--belarc Advisor says she is 37 updates behind--says a lot for a COMPAQ new PC--wonder how long it has been on the shelf--but I digress).:D

Have you tried display properties and hit the appearance tab?

Don't know if that it was you are looking for.

    Thanks, Cochese.:)
Do you mean Start--->Control Panel--->Display--> Appearance?
Only thing I can see there is Font size = Normal, and Windows XP style and Windows classic style. Nothing about fonts or changing fonts, unless I am on the wrong path.

It's 1.30 am, brain is addled and I am going back to bed. See you later. Bazza

I wonder if ClearType is enabled?

Same Start---> Control Panel---> Display--> but click Appearance then Effects > tick Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts and choose ClearType from the drop down list > OK > Apply

Default fonts used in MS windows and text are Trebuchet MS and Tahoma abd found in the Display > Appearance > Advanced http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310543

Im thinking the laptop is at a lower resolution compared to the new desktop, go to control panel/display/settings and compare the screen resolution. ed

Halo and tunered, you are both right.:)
Clear Type is enabled on my laptop, and my ex's desktop is a higher resolution that my laptop. Can't remember what hers are set at.
Will have to compare both PC's, side by side, resolution by resolution, next time I am there.

Whatever the font is it is skinny, not at all like Arial 2 size (and body) on this reply in MG. I am after something more like Arial 2 than what she has already.

Sorry if my reply is not really technical, and difficult to get across what font I am after, but hers is a really insipid font. Bazza

You're all close. It is in the Start---> Control Panel---> Display--> Appearance --> Advanced
Select the items you want to change the font for, where it says Item:
In your case I think it's active title bar. Then you can select the font you are after from the massive list then select apply. Windows should give you the Please Wait while it changes your settings. I use Tahoma as it is clear and easy to read, and looks cool. (IMO) I use that on my Compaq lappy too.
You might notice it will put the name of the font you change it too in the "Font size" field in the Display Properties>Appearance tab too.

I hope I was able to explain that ok.

Just keep in mind, the lower the resolution the bigger things get, like icons, box's, just everything on desktop will be bigger. ed

Thanks Halo for the M$ link,:) Mulletgut for a similar explanation,:) and tunered also.:)

It will be interesting to compare both PC's to see what fonts, sizes, etc., are used.

    Thanks again, guys. Bazza
