im looking for NAS. and am not sure what to get.

i have looked at several 1TB. netgear. WD mybook. Qnap. and so on.

and get more and more confused.

    im looking for relativly cheap.

i think i would prefer 2 drives for raid. for security.
    and have looked at the
Western Digital My Book World Edition 4 TB with 2 x 2 TB.
but then i read that it is slow. noisy.
ok as long as it can play music and video without lag its ok for me i think.
    but still sounds bad.

and i want easy to use. im no programmer. so KISS.

have also looked at NETGEAR Stora MS2110. with 1 TB. but with a slot for another HDD. but it cost half of the 2x2 TB mybook so......

i might also use it for bit torrent.
but it is mostly intended as a safe place for my files. and a place i can get my music and stuff. over the net. home network. TV . Laptop. and so on.

im not rich. but am willing to pay for the 4 TB mybook. if it is good.
since it looks to be good. 2 drives. no fan=low noise but aperently it isent.

    and alot of capacity.

but since it is only for me.and maybe a few friends to back up ans stuff.

matbe a 1 TB is ok but i would miss the raid i think.

then there is QNAP TS-109 Pro II. ok its only 1 TB. and no extra room for another HDD. but then it has a cpu of its own. ?

and the Buffalo LinkStation Live LS-CH1.0TL.
witch looks realy good and cheap. and cost a 1/3 of the mybook.
    but again just 1 TB.

Eny help or clarification or advise is apreciated.
    thanks.

We use the iomega StorCenters here at work, not bad. There are 2 drives in the case that are mirrored for you. Plug it in and do small config.
I'd also recommend NASLite if you have room for an old PC sitting around. I ran this forever without any issues and you can make it any size you like.
Put hardware together & boot from CD or USB - small config - easy.
I gave it up for a Windows Home Server which I'd go for now. It has 4 bays, does media sharing and backs up your PC too.
    Its Windows.

I have the 1TB MyBook World and it is a little noisy and slow when transferring from PC, but this poses no problem for me.

It happily streams 1080p files across my network to my PS3. This is one function of DLNA. DLNA means you can stream media across your home wireless network to any other compatible wireless device (PS3, WD media station, some Samsung TV's etc)

It also comes with an online service called MiOnet. you can install a MiOnet client onto any of your laptops or other computers and access your MyBook from anywhere with an internet connection. If you are using someone elses computer you can use MiOnet through a java based web-applet, but in my experience this thing is hideously slow to log-in (only on web)

It also has extremely easy back-up software supplied, which is one of the main reasons I bought it. I was new to NAS too, and the MyBook gear made it simple for me :)

Unfortunatley I can't say anymore than this. It's used only to back-up university work and to store films/pics/and music for use across a wireless network. I don't know what else it is capable of :confused

    Hope this helps

well sounds good. and is the stuff i need to know.
can i take mionet on a USBkey. so its easyer ?

    can it download torrents ?

in my network. i have in all in my swithc.

    PC
    Laptop
    phone
    TV
    PS3
    Wii
    Printer

but i can take the Wii out dont use it

The Mionet app can only be installed on 3 computers, so you cant load it onto a USB key. You'll have to use the web log-on for anything else. It takes a long time to login, but once you're in it's relatively quick.

Your TV/PS3, laptop, PC, and printer (as long as it has integrated networking) will all recognise the MyBook as a network drive.

I am absolutely sure that it CANNOT be used to download torrents, but there are a lot of hacks out there for it (eg. to turn it into a print server)

I think all-round it's just a basic bit of kit with some good software bundled in

EDIT: thanks for the thanks :)

well at the moment i going towards the buffalo 1 TB.
it does have torrent. ok so it isent a dual. but i can put one of my external drives on it. for backup. of importent files.

and moneywise its good it is cheap. and i guess i can get another bigger one later when i need it. and then it might be alot cheaper. i hope.

but for now im thinking keep it cheap. since i have no money.
    and it soon xmas.

but aperently it is hard to set up. a big minus for me.

im no good at that sort of stuff

The reviews are all over the place for this drive. 5 stars, 1 star, 3 stars etc.

Luckily there doesn't seem to be any reports of poor reliability, which I would always say is the best thing that can be said about a NAS drive. You dont want this thing dying on you, after all, it's there to protect you when other drives die
