Improper Formatting, Recovering Files

Hi, I made a huge mistake with my computer: I was re-sizing a partition using gParted and my computer lost power. After turning it back on, the other section of the harddrive (with Windows 8 installed) works okay. The data partition being re-sized is corrupted.

The properties window shows that the partition is 0 bytes large (is actually about 250 GB). Error checking and re-lettering the partition (sometimes) makes the file structure accessible, but every file has an error opening. Recuva and EASUS Data Recovery can recover files to the healthy partition, but they are still corrupted. I am most interested in recovering my JPG files from the drive, everything else is not so important.

Any ideas on what to try? I think I may be out of options. Thanks for all of the help.

You might be. Here is the problem: Once you overwrite something where the data was, it's gone forever. So, at issue is what may still be there and not overwritten.

If you can boot to Windows, you can try http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/recuva_portable.html otherwise you need a forensic compnay that would cost hundreds, possibly for nothing.

    Sorry.

Hi, thanks for the response. I've tried running Recuva from within the Windows partition. It can recover the files, but they do not open properly.

Maybe I wasn't clear on the way the hard drive is partitioned currently:
B:/ is the data partition with the files that I'm hoping to recover
C:/ is the Windows 8 partition

I don't think that running Windows 8 from its partition and saving to C:/ will have overwritten anything on B: (although...I'm not sure about this.) Would the data in B:/ have been overwritten by running things from C:?

    Thanks again for the help!

I think you are hosed - or rather your data is hosed. Understand when you resize partitions, files are moved here and there to make room and it appears the power loss was in the middle of that process.

I am sure you don't need to hear this, but why would you attempt something so risky as resizing partitions without making a backup of your data first? :confused The GParted instructions clearly warn about data loss possibilities when dinking with partitions, even mentioning power loss as a potential cause.
I am afraid your only recourse at this time is, as MA suggested, to enlist the services of a professional forensic data recovery lab. This can cost $100s or even up into the $1000s (depending on drive size and your requirements) but if the data is worth it, then so are the services. That said, there is no guarantee the files they do recover (if able to recover any files) can be opened either. I suspect they will not be any more successful than you were. :(

Sorry! I am afraid the only good coming out of this is [hopefully] others will see how important it is to have a good backup plan, and use it - especially before doing something that affects your saved data.
