G'day everyone. I'm sorry to have to resort to this but I'm overconfused by all the technical jargon in some of the other posts here and would much prefer if a moderator could take me through a step-by-step process.
Basically my computer has been ad-free and running beautifully since last december, but I've suddenly (very suddenly) encountered a major hurdle. I've suddenly had a bunch of 'malware' and spyware pop up. My system maintenance in terms of spyware has consisted of a daily Ad-Aware SE Personal (always updated) full system scan and picking up more than 4 harmful cookies has been rare until now. However, my more recent scans have heralded some horrible news and I'm being bombarded by ads every time I open a browser. My reboots/web browsing/applications are much slower now.
I'll try to give you as much information as to what's going on as I know how to.

My latest Ad-Aware scan (effectively right now) has revealed this:

    MRU List (30 Objects Total)
    TAC Rating: No threat

    Win32.TrojanDownloader .Alphabet (2 Objects Total)
    TAC rating: 10

    ClickSpring (1 Objects Total)
    TAC Rating: 6

    Tracking Cookie (7 Objects Total)
    TAC Rating: 3

0 Possible New Malware 0 (5 Objects Total) ((Never seen this before))
    TAC Rating: No threat (?)

    PurityScan (4 Objects Total)
    TAC Rating: 6

    Win32.Trojan.Agent (4 Objects Total)
    TAC Rating: 10

    WinAntiVirusPro (21 Objects Total)
    TAC Rating: 10

    Adware.Yazzle (4 Objects Total)
    TAC Rating: 7

Now, just before, my ad-aware results showed only Win32.Trojan.Agent, which I checked and let the program delete. This was after discovering that the source of my popups was a product called Outerinfo, which I followed online instructions in a simple deletion process via Add/Remove Programs and a reboot.
So, from the beginning, I deleted Outerinfo, rebooted, then ran Ad-Aware, checked harmful items, found that Outerinfo hadn't been uninstalled (it had grown in size by about 200MB in fact), uninstalled it again, then rebooted and now here I am with apparantly even more problems and although Outerinfo isn't appearing on my Add/Remove list I'm still getting the odd popup with it's header "Advertisement from Outerinfo". Upon last reboot I received a message which I thought was from windows about my computer being infected with 9 spyware items. So I followed an apparantly typical set of XP instructions until it triggered a browser, which I promptly exited and closed all applications. I believe this is the source of WinAntiVirusPro, though I'm not sure.

    Please help!
I'll go at any lengths to get my computer back to a clean running, efficient state.

    Kindest Regards,
    Enz

    Edit: removed inline hijackthis log

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

    In dire need Mk II

    G'day again,
Apologies for not taking the aforementioned steps. I didn't understand the process and I'm working under a short timeframe I really just wanted a quick solution. Now, all things understood, I have completed reports from Bitdefender, CounterSpy, ActiveScan and I will post my Hijack This log as well as my Ad-Aware SE Personal log just to show how things have change since going through the process.
It has improved the functionality by I'd say 30-50%... but it's still far from perfect. Win32.Trojan.Gen just doesn't want to go away and has been picked up in almost every scan I've done, and quarantined, only to resurge.
Anyway, here are my logs, some advice would be great.
Note: I get a recurring "WinAntiVirusPro" popup as well as a few other assorted brands at this stage. Outerinfo popups have ceased.

I had a question too, from what I understand, the scans located a number of corrupted files in two folders on my desktop (New Folder (2) and New Folder ISO). Is it safe to just send the whole folders with their contents into the recycling bin and then just clear it away? Or will this not help at all?

Re: In dire need Mk II

P.S. I'm going overseas for the next 4 days or so... I'll have need of my laptop, but I will be working offline. Will my malware issues still affect the functionality of the laptop even when offline?

Edit: Forgot to post ShowNew and RegKeys... I'll pop these up tomorrow morning (Aus Time)--- which is in about 5 hours or so... need some sleep. Hope I've provided enough information as of now for you to at least give me a little bit of feedback/answer my questions.
    Thanks!

Re: In dire need Mk II

We need the GetRunKey and ShowNew logs before we can continue. Also you must rename HijackThis.exe to analyse.exe as requested in step 7 or your log may not even show various malware we need to see. After renaming it, you also have to attach a new HJT log.

As far as whether these infections will impact you while offline....they probably will in some form.

Apologies again... here are the missing files.
Thanks for all your instructions and I hope at last I've provided what you need for analysis.

Is your copy of CounterSpy a paid version or is it the free trial version from the READ ME?

Why are you running this PC without an antivirus and without a real software firewall?

Continue by downloading two tools we will need

    - Process Explorer

    - Pocket KillBox

Extract them to their own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate them later.

Make sure you have rebooted in Normal Mode (do not open any other processes)

Make sure that one and only one Internet Explorer browser is opened up

    - Run Process Explorer

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    rqrsttu.dll
    gebyx.dll
    yormsotj.dll
    winrvc32.dll

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under winlogon click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    rqrsttu.dll
    gebyx.dll
    yormsotj.dll
    winrvc32.dll

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under Explorer click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

Next double click on iexplore.exe and again click once on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    rqrsttu.dll
    gebyx.dll
    yormsotj.dll
    winrvc32.dll

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under iexplore click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

Now back at the main Process Explorer window look for the below process and if found right click on it and select Kill Process.

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\gbapolox.exe

    Now just exit Process Explorer.

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it
double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Now run Ccleaner!
    After reboot, run Ccleaner

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

Sorry for my absence of reply. I've been overseas. I'm back now and shall now run all your fantastic advice. As far as Antivirus and Firewalls go, I had no idea that Windows Firewall was inadequate until I read your wonderful website, and my experience with Norton Antivirus in the past has been bad, and quite frankly I'm not really keen on spending x number of dollars on a resource-hungry antivirus software that slows my computer down to the same effect. Of course, I'm assuming alot. I've noticed that you endorse a number of free antivirus programs and firewalls. And I'll certainly look into that.

And finally THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP.
I'll complete the below steps and keep you posted on how I go.
    Cheers mate.

You're welcome! Just attach the logs when you finish. Also answer my question about CounterSpy!
