    Win98SE, IE 6.0.2

About 4-5 days ago I noticed the screen flashing/flickering/refreshing in IE, especially in the animations in the ads and in Yahoo, but on all other pages as well. When I click in the boxes to delete emails in Yahoo, the screen refreshes with each click and it never did that before.

I've run Ad-Aware, and spyware, trojan, and virus removal programs, have colors set at high color (16 bit), changed 'active desktop' to 'view as web page' and back, disabled power management in device manager and in bios. I've probably done unnecessary things but don't know what else to do to get it stopped.

Can anybody give me any ideas as to what to do next?
    Thanks!

Could you post some hardware specs? i.e.... CPU, GFX Card etc

Colour @ 16bit?? I would see what GFX card you have and update the drivers to the latest version.

also just out of curiosity in Display Properties > Settings > Advanced > Monitor ... what is your screen re-freash rate?

But you already tried to change screen color setup right .. did you restart between changes?

Did you install apps that require less than 256 Cols?

Have you tried using a different browser as well?

Thanks to both of you for your responses!

I didn't post hardware because nothing has changed in years and I suspected a virus. Like something came in and changed something in my settings or files.

The computer is an ancient (9 years old) Gateway 2000 with:
    Matrox MGA Millennium
Mitsubishi Diamond Plus 72 (TFV-8705) (the physical monitor says Diamondtron and has a Gateway sticker on it).

The color has always been set at high color (16 bit); but I changed it per that Microsoft Support article and then changed it back. And I rebooted after each change. I didn't install software that required 256 colors, I was just trying a MS support option. The other things I tried were from the MS web site.

I ran 'update driver' for the graphics card and it said I have the latest driver. Everything in device manager looks okay.

In Display Properties... I don't see 'refresh rate'. Could it be somewhere else or just doesn't exist in Win98?

    I haven't tried another browser.

I appreciate your time and effort in helping me!

Could you post a link where the flickering turns up?

I'm having the same problem, seems to be flash banners etc. I have a Presario 6000 with Win XP. This is driving me crazy !! I've tried updating drivers, unistalled and reinstalled both flash and Java. Nothing seems to help.

    Any ideas?

I took your advice and tried UltraBrowser. The flickering stopped so the problem must be in IE. Now to find it  lol

Thank you so much for replying! I thought everybody had given up... and it's driving me crazy, too, BuffRat. I keep trying things as I think of them.

Rainmak3r, it happens in flash banners (as BuffRat reported); an example is the banner at http://www.majorgeeks.com. Also this 'reply to thread' page in the forum, also the smilies flicker.

I had the latest version of IE but I reinstalled it anyway. Before doing that though, I tried restoring defaults; that was a good suggestion.

One other problem, which I consider minor but may be connected, is the screen saver I've used for years no longer works (it's an .exe on the desktop that I click on). I get the msg 'performed an illegal operation', and in the details 'GPF in mmsystem.dll'. I downloaded a new copy of the ss, same thing. But I don't seem to be having any other problems at all.

Last night I had the same banner flickering problem that was described on one of my XP computers after a Java update. Sorry that I can't provide more, but I work extremely odd hours at times, and am about to pass out/sleep at the present time.

Wello - sorry - no flickering with IE 6.0.2800.1106

My version of IE is: 6.0.2800.1106.

The only reason I mentioned the screen saver problem is that I don't know what connection, if any, IE has with mmsystem.dll. But as I said before, no other system problems.

Novice, I haven't done any Java updates (unless a program did it that I'm not aware of). How would I check for that?

I updated Java but also uninstalled it all. still got the flickering. More bad news, ten minutes after posting I that I had no flickering with Ultra Browser the flickering was back.I've uninstalled Java and Flash and tried it that way, still it flickers.

It's going out the window soon !!!!!! LOL
