None of that is needed I would normally sugest renaming the files by adding the word old in front or after the file name but as you said you could not see them under C: you can type the word REM (followed by a space) in front of each line in both files. As you finish each file click on File then Save in the menu bar.

The autoexec.bat file should now look like this:

    REM Bootup @ ECHO off
    REM tv dumpflags = 8
    REM tv dumpflags = 8

When you have done that reboot the PC. Then run CHKDSK again and see what the total free bytes figure now reads.

YARGWEL - I don't understand what it is you require me to do.:confused do you mean for me to delete everything thats in there and then type in

    REM autoexec.BAT

and do i do the same for config.sys do i delete everything thats in there ?

    REM config.sys

    regards,

    kriss.

No. Don't delete anything just add the word REM infront of each line in the autoexec.bat file and in the config.sys file.
As I said the autoexec.bat file should then look like this:

    REM Bootup @ ECHO off
    REM tv dumpflags = 8
    REM tv dumpflags = 8

and the config.sys file should look like this :

    REM Files = 50
    REM Buffers = 50
    REM DOS = High umb
    REM Lastdrive = Z
    REM Device = c/windows HIMEM system/testmem.OFF

You could copy and paste these in if you wanted to. ;)

    " " " prepare = 850
    keyboard uk c/windows command
    1hc:/windows/command/doskey.com
    SET Path = % path% c/programmes/

Yes to all the lines in the file. The WAVE.TSR is a Terminate Stay Resident program for your soundcard. So if you stop it from loading (that first line of the autoexec.bat file) you should have more conventional memory and it possibly wont make any difference to your sound anyway. ;)

No there's nothing in there. It tells me you use a lexmark printer, a logitech mouse and you're a Dr Who fan. ;)

And there was nothing in the autoexec.bat or config.sys files that relate to the screen.

HAve you tried the REM'd out versions of the files yet?

    Hi Yargwell,
So are you saying then my computer is clean, no bugs or malware etc.

what do you mean when you say have i tried out the REM'd out versions of the files. in what way do you mean exactly.

Ahh do you mean have i put REM in front of each line yet ? if that is what you mean then the answer is both yes and no, I did and the CHKDSK in dos wouldn't run or work and it just kept freezing on me, so i took REM off again, and then at least i could run windows. hope this makes sense. any more ideas ;)

Thanks so much for your time.

I've been watching, never too late to learn something new.

Just curious, do you have a safe disk for you 98 setup? That would load an OS independent of Win98 (even though it is still a version of 98 DOS). You might be able to sidestep all the other issues and run a memory test (and others) with it.

We have a lot of Dr. Who fans here (go figure), myself included.

You don't have to load windows to test the memory - that would just be added overhead, IMHO. I can't seem to find any memtest86 boot floppies - everything is a CD iso. I have a memtest86 floppy that I've used.
I'd also like to know how much swap file you have, kriss-47.

I run a notebook, which is only a Pentium 11 and had 98SE on it with 128MB of RAM. I don't have the freezing you are seeing.
Now I also used a program that would release RAM because 98SE is noted for leaking and if you don't want to freeze, you either have to reboot or cleanup and release some RAM as well as having a decent sized swap file.

In answer to your first question - that depends on whether you have also run an up-to-date virus checker as well. You should read the stickies in the Malware forum to get more information on other programs to try as well. ;)

For the second part with the REM'd out versions of the files does it boot into Windows OK? And if it does can you open a DOS window and run CHKDSK from there?

    Hi Yargwell and all,

On sunday afternoon i switched my computer on and nothing happened, all i got was a BLANK screen, the box was on but WINDOWS wasn't loading at all, tried that several times, but the screen remained blank, took it to someone i know for them to have a look and would you believe it WINDOWS LOADED first time. :confused

I presume my hard drive must be on its way out. I have also took out the extra ram that someone put in for me (just in case it was faulty), its back down to 128 now, as thats when the freezing started. so i will just have to see what happens with it.

    Thank you,

    Kriss.

    Kriss,

After today I'll be away for a week due to work commitments. So I haven't just abandoned you if I don't reply. ;)

The other geeks will look after you I'm sure. :major

I'll check back to see what has happened when I get back.

    Yargwel :):wave
