    hi,

I am new to this so please bear with me. I have read several posts about what I need to posts and what not to, to me it is a bit mind-boggling, sorry, I just wish I had half the knowledge you guys have.
Anyway, I will start by telling you what is going on with my pc, and then you can let me know what I need to post or not post from there, please.
I have been having problems with a super slow internet connection. I have DSL but my online speed is slower than dial up. So, naturally I called my DSL provider, they sent out a tech and he unhooked my ethernet cable from my pc and hooked it to his laptop and he got real good speeds. They did a few basic checks and couldn't come up with a solution. They highly reccomended you guys. They said that the best they could figure is that I had some kind of spyware or something that was slowing the connection down on my pc. I am currently and have been for some time running Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, and Avast Anti-Virus on a regular basis. I have downloaded hijack this and (aida32pe_393 to give you my system info, but unsure how to work this program) to hopefully provide you with the information you need. I am running Windows XP. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you for your time,
    Shadowwood

    Welcome to MajorGeeks shadowwood!:)

It is quite possible you do have something that is using up your bandwidth thus slowing you down. Our getting started instructions are always the same...just follow the guide one step at a time and you'll do fine.:) It really is much easier to do than it may appear at first glance because there are a lot of detailed explanations included for those that are completely new to computers.

    - Please run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread
READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:

    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

When you return to make your next post, make sure you
attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too (these scans are covered in steps 6 & 7 of the READ & RUN ME sticky)

    Bitdefender
    Panda Scan
    HijackThis

    Good Luck!:)

Looks like the scans have cleaned up quite a few things but there are some things that still need to be taken care of. Chaslang or Shadow_Puter_Dude will assist you further so please wait for their instructions.

One thing of note that you need to take care of. You did not install Hijack This per the tutorial. You are running it directly from the zip file (a temporary location) --> C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\cczipwiz\HijackThis.exe HJT needs to be in it's own folder, in a permanent location (Program Files) so that backups created during removal processes are safe from accidental deletion if they should need to be restored.

    Creating the C:\Program Files\HJT folder:

    • Click START and select Explore
    • Select the drive where Windows is installed (normally drive C)
    • Navigate to the C:\Program Files folder and select it.
    • Now click the on the top menu where it says File and then select New.
    • Then select Folder
    • A new folder is created and highlighted
    • Just type HJT to overwrite the default name (New Folder)
Also, I converted your log files to the normal format so they aren't bunched all together. This will make it easier for they guys to review the information.:)

It seems you may have installed a bunch of screen saver items and some are apparently malware.

Let's start by getting an installed programs list from HijackThis too!
    • Run HijackThis, click Open the Misc Tools section
    • Click Open Uninstall Manager
    • Click Save List (generates uninstall_list.txt)
    • Click Save, to save it to a file where you can find it.
    • Attach the uninstall_list.txt file to your next message.
No we will fix a few things!

You should consider uninstalling Acez Jump Start Screen Saver. Read their Privacy Policy ( http://www.acez.com/privacy.htm ). I don't like what I read especially the stuff about Ad Servers.

Also you may want to consider uninstall QuikShield as I have read that it can be a cause of annoying popups.

Also uninstall StripSaver2 if installed (looks like it is to me).

Make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://us7.hpwis.com/
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-us7.hpwis.com/
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://srch-us7.hpwis.com/
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://hsremove.com/done.htm
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://srch-us7.hpwis.com/
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://hsremove.com/done.htm
    O9 - Extra button: MktBrowser - {17A27031-71FC-11d4-815C-005004D0F1FA} - C:\Program Files\MarketBrowser\lmt\MarketBrowser_Launch.xpy
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: MarketBrowser - {17A27031-71FC-11d4-815C-005004D0F1FA} - C:\Program Files\MarketBrowser\lmt\MarketBrowser_Launch.xpy
    O16 - DPF: {8EF27A70-DD04-11D6-B7F6-00A0C9CD5F8A} - http://www.quikshield.com/qshsetup.exe
    O16 - DPF: {917623D1-D8E5-11D2-BE8B-00104B06BDE3} (CamImage Class) - http://208.190.5.197/activex/AxisCamControl.ocx

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
    c:\program files\common files\Totem Shared <--- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\StripSaver2 <--- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\Vg <--- the whole folder
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\Sexy Lovable Todd\ss saver <--- the whole folder
    c:\windows\ss3unstl.exe

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.
Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST).

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now.

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

Thank you so much for your help. At the moment I am away from my home and my pc due to unforseen circumstances. However I have saved and printed a copy of your instructions and will proceed with them as soon as possible. It may take a couple of days until I am able to get to do this. I will let you know as soon as I have completed this. Thanks again for your time and help. I cannot say thank you enough. As for the QuickShield, I did not install it, I don't know how it got there and I have tried getting rid of it and have been unsuccessful. Hopefully after I have followed all your instructions it will fix a lot of things. Thanks again.

    Sincerely,
    Shadowwood

Okay! The add the below line to the list of items to fix with HijackThis.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuikShield] qkshield.exe

Then also when you are in safe mode deletin files, look for the below and delete it:

    c:\windows\system32\qkshield.exe

You may not find it if HJT was able to delete it.
