    Good Day All,

I had a user call me this morning to complain that their machine was running poorly. A review of the event log revealed numerous disk access errors (namely bad sectors), so I ran a chkdsk. After running chkdsk, we got a stop error. The recommendations were to restart the machine (which I did.. COLD), then to check for viruses and run chkdsk.

Now, this machine won't boot, even in safe mode. I was wondering if there are any ammendments to the malware removal thread that I should take into consideration. As of now, my plan is to connect this hard drive to another machine as slave, and run through the thread as such, but if there are any better suggestions, I am more than willing to hear them.

    Thanks!

If you always refer to the online version of the READ & RUN ME, then you have all the current information. If does not sound like you have malware problems. Sounds more like a hardware problem to me.

Thank you for your reply, Chaslang. I agree that it sounds more like a harware issue, but thought it would be prudent to do a malware scan, as this user also has the highest virus count of all our AV clients, and it seemed to coincide with the stop error.

However, I think you may have misunderstood my question. I do realize that you keep that thread well updated. But, since this drive is connected as slave, are there any special considerations that I should be taking? (ie, is the boot sector being scanned, MBR, etc?)

There is really nothing to change other than making sure you are scanning that drive with what ever tools you run.

    You're welcome!

But obviously the ability to scan it, is based on it physically powering/spinning up. All you said before was it would not boot, but that can mean alot of different things. You also did not mention an OS.
