    Hi~

I think I've done everything asked of me in the forums. Please let me know (gently) if I missed something. ;)

It seems that at any website I go to--BBC, Yahoo, Snopes.com--I see graphic ads for adultfriendfinder.com embedded in the pages themselves. I've noticed that I also constantly get ads for drugstore.com, fling.com, and some Christian dating website. Going through the steps indicated did nothing to help with this ad hijacking.

Thank you for helping people out with their computer problems!

    Regards,
    Nicole

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Why are you running this PC with no antivirus program and no real firewall?

First you must disable Spybot's Teatimer. See this: How to disable Spybot's TeaTimer

I suggest you begin by uninstalling the below from Time Warner Cable. These may well be security risks.
    Medic Patch 6.0.0.8
    Road Runner Medic 6.1

Read what is stated here about this program. http://www.glaryutilities.com/startuplibrary/medicsp2=sprtcmd.exe.html

Now uninstall Ask Toolbar as requested in step 1 of the READ & RUN ME.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5CA3D70E-1895-11CF-8E15-001234567890} - (no file)
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {9B7E79AC-A646-4e45-A70F-1B3981FE370E} - (no file) (HKCU)
    O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0015-0000-0002-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.5.0_02) -

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run Ccleaner to clean out only temp files and nothing else!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hi, chaslang:

Thanks for writing back to me. I'll follow the steps you've detailed here and then I'll report back to you.

We (supposedly) have an anti-virus program through our ISP, Time Warner. Obviously it's not very good. Please tell me what you'd recommend for anti-virus and for a better firewall.

    Thank you,
    Nicole

    Hi, chaslang:

I couldn't find Medic Patch 6.0.0.8 on my computer, but I did uninstall Road Runner Medic 6.1. I found a file called MEDIC, but I wasn't sure if that is the one I should uninstall.

I got rid of Ask toolbar. Sorry; I didn't even know I had it!

THANK YOU for telling me how to delete that stupid Windows Messenger!! That thing annoys me to no end, and I could NEVER figure it out.

With ComboFix, it shut down on me three times and said there was a problem with pv.cfexe. I was afraid that perhaps I hadn't closed all the programs I needed to do, but I couldn't find anything that it could be. The third time the error window came up, I clicked OK, but ComboFix then proceeded to run and it seemed to be fine. Please let me know if I need to do it again.

Thanks so much for your help!
    Nicole

You don't have any protection software installe from them. Only the junk I suggested removing and that was not protection software.

Will be covered in my final instructions below.

You did not tell me how things are working so I will assume all is good since your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Are you sure that you are not just referring to normal adverstising popups? Many sites have popups and popunders for adverstising?

Which browser are you using when this occurs? FireFox or IE? See if it happens with both browsers? Make sure that the other browser is totally closed when trying each?

When the popups occur, which browser do they open?

Give me the exact URL that you are on when the popups occur?

Do the popups also occur in safe boot mode?

Perhaps your problem is that you just need to complete my instructions and get your PC properly protected. You have no protection installed. You need an antivirus, a realtime antispyware blocker and a real firewall. The Windows firewall is totally inadequate.

    Hi, chaslang:

The ads I'm referring to aren't popups. They're actually embedded in the pages themselves. We were seeing porn ads that were embedded, but those at least are gone, so that's a major improvement. As for the other ads--which weren't porn but were still kind of dicey--I no longer see them on Firefox, but we were still seeing them on IE (which is what my husband prefers to use). I just downloaded the new IE, though, so I'll let you know if the problem continues.

In the meantime, I'll go through all the other steps that you suggested.

Thanks so much for your help!
    Nicole

I'm still waiting to hear your status after installing the protection software and also if still having the problem, please answer my question on whether they occur in safe boot mode.

Also I have another question, you say your husband is having the problems. Whose account are you posting logs from? If you are not posting logs from your husbands user account then we are not cleaning the proper account.

    Hi, chaslang:

Thanks for helping me with my issue. Everything is fine in Firefox now. No problems whatsoever. I'm not sure about IE--I never use and this incident finally convinced my husband to switch, too. :-D

    You're welcome.

Okay but please be aware that you do need IE for many websites including Microsoft's which requires use of IE inorder to get all updates.
