Incomplete XP Boot

My friends computer has an incomplete boot in XP Pro.
1- It will post and the initial XP screen shows up (appears to be loading), then all he gets is a blank screen (black).
2- Using F8, we can get to the selection screen and try loading loading into safe mode. It begins loading and then stops (freezes).

He cannot find his original disks. I have an old XP Home disk. Should a try the second/automatic repair from that disk (or will it even work).

Is there anything I can download on my computer-burn to CD-and try to fix his?

 

He has an HP Media Center computer 3700 (AMD), I don't know the model but I can get it later today. We tried the Last Known Good Configuration.

 

When you boot into safe mode does it scroll through a list of files, like "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mouse.dll"? If so, what is the last one that you see in the list before it freezes?

 

Yes, It scrolls through 2 pages. I will have to get back to you on the last entry.
