inconsistencies in filesystem?

Hello. Just suddenly my computer won't let me run disk defragmenter. It analyzes then says "defragmentation of C: has been aborted due to inconsistencies in the filesystem. Run CHKDSK or SCANDISK to repair, then try again" I ran CHKDSK, it didn't fix it. I restored to and earlier time, and ran the computer in safe mode and, still, it doesn't work. Basically I am wondering if this is this something that I should be concerned about. Can I fix it (without reformatting?)

System (I don't know what will be helpful or not, so I'll try to be specific):
Windows XP Home, service pack 1
ECS L7VMM3 motherboard with onboard AMD Athlon XP 3200+
nVidia Geforce4 MX 4000 (128 MB memory)
512 MB RAM
75 GB harddrive
And I do have an anti-virus program.

did you try running scandisk on thorough and see if it picks up any errors?

 

I would have tried scandisk, but I couldn't find it. I typed it into run and it didn't work, and I did a search for it and it didn't find anything.

 

open my computer, then right click on your C:\ drive, and go to properties, then go to the tools tab, under check errors click on "check now" to run scandisk, run it with both options checked after clicking "check now"
