Increased loading/waiting time

My Computer used to run really fast, but just lately I have found it to be a lot slower and when typing the cursor freezes for a few seconds before I can type further. When loading a webpage the revolving circle in the address line can take up to 10 seconds before appearing and then a few more seconds for the actual page to load. I am not sure whether this is a software problem (something running in the background) or a disk problem. I hope someone can help.
I did an AVG performance test the other day and the result was that my computer was running slow.
    Thanks

    Matilda

There are lots of things that can cause what you describe.

Something running in the background: check with the Task Manager's Processes tab.

Why are things running in the background: check your Startup list (e.g. using CCleaner Tools | Startup).

    Overheating: check with SpeedFan.

Do you clean your browser cache and temp files sometimes?

Do you defrag your HD sometimes?

    What is your Windows version?

    Thanks for your reply.
    I use CCleaner regularly
I clean out temp files and browser cache regularly
I also do a defrag twice a month
    Windows 9

I don't think it is a heating problem as the computer does not feel hot at all.

    I hope this helps
    Thanks

Did you check the Startup list in CCleaner Tools? You can save the list as a text file and post it here in the forum, so someone can check and advise you of unneeded items.

That must be a really early beta :cool

Your start up list shows two Antivirus products.
    Code:
    AVG_UI AVG Technologies CZ, s.r.o. "C:\Program Files (x86)\AVG\AVG2013\avgui.exe" /TRAYONLY
MSC Microsoft Corporation "c:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\msseces.exe" -hide -runkey

Is AVG just the Antivirus or the Internet Security Suite? The reason I ask is that the two AVs will conflict and you'll need to remove one.

Check the air input/output vents for dust buildup anyway and clean as necessary. I have a long attachment for the house vacuum cleaner that I use to pull the gunk out with, and a can of compressed air for the keyboard.

For laptops, use an underneath fan or anything that elevates it off the work surface to allow airflow. Make sure that a desktop unit has adequate clearance all round for the same reason.

The Feels Hot Test is not reliable, by the time it starts to feel hot, damage may have already been done. Consider using SpeedFan to get a good look...

The effects of heat on performance cannot, IMO, be overstated...

Thanks for the replies. The AVG I use(d) is the AV Free edition 2013. I will remove it and see if there is any improvement. The AVG is scheduled to start at 1pm each day, but something caused the computer to "read" everything before I was allowed to open it, with the hovering, even when typing I have to wait a few seconds sometimes for the next letter to appear.
Regarding the buildup of dust etc., I do use a vaccuum and compressed air aerosol to clean the underside of the computer and keyboard.

    Hi

I would remove AVG and see how you go as Windows 8 has the updated Windows Defender installed that covers scanning for malware and viruses.

But I would also try this, boot into Safe Mode (F8 at boot and choose Safe Mode with Networking), does your PC seem snappy again?

If so then there is likely to be some startups we can disable or better delete as not really needed unless you really want them to start with your PC, but most suck up boot time.

And a few I would delete or disable (but using StartupCPL standalone) over msconfig as msconfig can cause orphaned entries (that are disabled) to software uninstalled, are :.......

LightScribe Control Panel (always delete this myself as I can enter the LS app when I need too)
Skype (unless you jump on this as soon as your PC boots then start it when you want too)
Family Tree Builder Update MyHeritage (same as above)
HotKeysCmds Intel Corporation (personally never used these)
IgfxTray Intel Corporation (can access from Control Panel or right click properties and display if needed, which once your display is setup, don't think many really change the settings)
    Persistence Intel Corporation (as above)

Common Bluetooth.lnk Broadcom Corporation (do you use Bluetooth a lot)?
Snapfish PictureMover.lnk Hewlett-Packard Company (do you use Snapfish a lot that it needs to move pictures to online space every day)?

A narrow down of these by disabling first may give you back a better startup, then we could look deeper to what apps are left enabled.

I tend to only have 3-4 startups at most and those are Security and a backup app.

Thanks - I have disabled some as suggested. Not sure how it works yet, but will check it out as I go today.
